Please help me pick a 22LR revolver.

You could always give up on the double-action idea, and just get a single action revolver.

How often is anyone going to shoot DA anyways? Most people don't.

A Ruger single-ten is a great gun. And you can easily unhook one of the trigger springs (under the grips) and you will have a trigger-pull of about 1 pound.

I was going to say that but the OP was somewhat determined on guns on the list..
I guess not after all, yours is a good alternative..

If I am shooting for practical training, I only shoot my K & J frames DA.

I only shoot my DA revolvers in DA. The one exception is when I want to align the sights and eliminate 'operator error' as much as possible. I have a Single Ten, and it's nice, but the painfully slow loading and unloading ensures that it spends very little time at the firing line. Keep in mind that any DA revolver that has an exposed hammer can be shot in SA too. Best of both worlds.

I am not at all fixed on the brands I mentioned, but yes I would much much rather have double action than single action.

More brands added to the list would be very appreciated, I had only listed ones that I saw reviews for, or that were available near me.

The shop near me has Alfa, but not Ruger or S&W, so I will only be able to directly compare the Alfa to Charter Arms or Taurus in hand.

Dexter and SilverFox,

I think that you may be on to something with your recommendation of a single-action. I would be against it if there were a perfect double-action that suited my needs, but I don't think I'm going to get the "dream gun" I'm looking for.

Double action is nice, a light trigger is nice, and 9-10 rounds is nice. However, low weight is mandatory, especially after my wife just held my Glock Gen4 G20, and said "Definitely not this". Therefore, I am now looking at the lowest-weight possible for her 22LR revolver, which forces my hand with single-action.

After checking the net, the lowest weight I have found so far is a Ruger Bearcat. The bad part (as for my ideal gun) is that it's SA, and only six rounds, but it meets the critical criteria of being light, coming in at only 1.5 lbs (24oz) according to: http://www.ruger.com/products/newBearcat/models.html

Sorry to start this conversation over, but now that SA is on the table, can anyone recommend the best of this action? Still willing to pay more to get higher quality, would like a great trigger, would prefer 9-10 rounds, and lightweight absolutely critical.

The other Rugers available that hold 9-10 rounds weigh 2.5 pounds instead of 1.5, which is too much.

Edit: Have just posted a WTB ad for the Bearcat, and we'll see if I get any hits.

Luv the little Bearcat! I always take it to the range along with the Big Boys….tiny to pack and tiny in the hands but suites the little 22lr nicely.

Two options I'd consider if weight is that critical are the Ruger Bearcat already mentioned and the Alpha project 22 that has the sleeved aluminium barrel.

I've held both AP .22 guns and the one with the Dan Wesson style outer alloy sleeve is very noticeably lighter. Too light for my tastes in fact. But if your wife is petit and found the Glock to be too heavy then she would certainly be OK with the alloy barreled AP....... Unless she simply doesn't really want to have anything to do with shooting.

The AP's have heavy DA triggers out of the box. But this is easily fixed by installing a Rusty Woods mainspring. This swap turned my 9mm AP from having a stupidly heavy DA trigger into a gun which rivals my Wolff sprung S&W's. And that is high praise.

Generally the need for a very solid hammer strike to set off the rimfire rounds requires a hard mainspring or the optimized action sizing. And it seems like it's not practical to build small framed revolvers with light actions. All the smaller actions end up having harder DA trigger pulls than their bigger cousins.

The S&W 317 with a 5" barrel is available in Canada if you want to find them. Haven't seen any other than used for some time though.

The single action option is not a bad one at all. If your wife is having problems holding up a gun as light as a Glock and it is truly the weight which is bothering her then she's going to have a tough time pulling a DA trigger. Mind you an SA needs the shooter to thumb #### the hammer for every shot too........

Still think a Ruger SP101 would fit the bill very nicely for her or a nice Colt single action if you want to be really nice to her..

I went through the same thing , ended up with the ruger sp 101 and was concerned bout the reviews on the D/A trigger pull ...and to my surprise it wasn't as bad as u expected it to be ....truth be told I love that lil pistol , and haven't look back ....

Cheers Scott
