Correct, with the last changes on the dash 1 you could order one or the other but they came from factory with the straight backstrap and on the pre dash 1 4506 the straight grip wasn't available as an option.

I've never seen one, any chance of a photo, ideally side by side with a 4506??

My buddy has a 4506, and I've only fired a few rounds (maybe 20) but I found the trigger odd in that I thought I had it pulled completely but it still need another 1/8 of pull or so, but that could be my short fingers or lack of experience with .45 or similar frames.
Also, the reassembly seemed odd in the three prongs you need to push down on the frame to get the slide back on. But that could be something I'm just not used to, and it could be on several handguns.

A photo of your 4516 sounds good, if you don't mind. I did a little checking on the net but with my pre-metric era computer skills,
I wasn't able to find one of a decent enough size to give me a clear look at it. I'm guessing the 4516 is probably compareable in size to a 1911 Colt Commander and that's definately a size and handgun I like.
It's actually a little smaller then the Commander, a little bigger then the Officer's Model. - dan

Of all the 10mm S&W's I've owned, the only one still in the safe is my beloved DAO 1086 witch is still in like new condition with very few rounds through it.
How can you have a perfectly serviceable pistol in your safe and not shoot it? Some day the Liberals could get back in power and take them all away, shoot it like you might lose it!
Smith & Wesson's were made to be shot, Colt's live in safes and rarely see the light of day.

You're right SB, I should shoot it a lot since it's pretty accurate and the DAO trigger is awesome but since S&W only made 1660 of them and chances of finding parts in case there's a breakerage or even another one like it are pretty slim, I've always thought that I should keep it in like new conditon. Now, if I could find another one... It would be a whole different story!

If this works, there is a 4516 (with Hogue grips on it, still looking for some original delrin grips, they fit me better), a Colt Officers for size comparison, a colt Combat Commander ditto, and a S&W 4046. - dan
Nice photo, looks good and thanks for posting. It clarifies my size comparisson questions. I have a little project I'm prepping for and working on for next winter, making up some custom handgun grips to start with. The grips on your Commander looks like some of the wood I recently acquired for that 'winter' project. Thanks again for the photo, very nice
