‘Stopped him in his tracks’: Outrage after former pro hockey player kills grizzly

I have to disagree with you. Why should he not have posted to Facebook????? He has broken no laws and would like to show his acheiments just like the rest of the world on Facebook. Why do we have to NOT draw attention to our lifestyle or sport and hide our head in the sand because we choose a take on a challenging LEGAL sport of hunting.... so not not offend the remainder of society???? They certainly do not show us the same courtesys.. sorry I can't get behind " shouldn't have posted on social media"

In saying the above if you choose Facebook as your platform expect criticism and ridicule. But if you read some of the comments from Facebook users, this young man does not deserve to be called names that rhyme with blunt. Facebook should remove the posts and warn the posters. It should be no more acceptable to us as it would be to them if we were to use the same language to describe LGBTQ people or women or anyone for that matter. Quite honestly it boaders on harassment, to death threatening, within our society is a crime I believe??

As for the comment " politicians will leave us alone if we don't draw attention to ourselves". Not the braveist of words spoken. For he who remains nameless shall forever go unheard!!!! Im not suggesting that we pound our chests and hang our kills on the hoods of our cars. But we should not have to hide or feel shame for being a hunter. Jesus Canada was founded and mapped for trapping and hunting during the fur trade. It should be mandated as part of our heritage. Not hidden from society because a portion of it takes exception. If your a hunter be proud, you don't have to pound the drum but most certainly play it and never be ashamed.

This is my just my take.

In my town, people walk freely with their rifles and shotguns over their shoulders. The 1st paragraph on county's webpage stresses it's deep history and connection to hunting. Our children walk into crown land with their .22s every day. All legal activities, not only in my town but across Canada. You can be a proud hunter and a march down to Toronto city hall or Queen's park with a rifle and it is perfectly legal but do you think it is a good idea!?! Facebook is like Toronto and cgn is like the town where I live.

you guys who are convinced that posting on social media is the cool thing to do realize that the reason there is no more grizzly hunt in BC was because of someone who just had to post his kill on social media.
your right, its well within your rights, but its just plain stupid if you want to continue.
legal or not, it turns the majority of the world who could care less one way or the other against us. And as long as we live in a democratic society majority wins.

Post your pictures and be proud on forums like this, and share with your friends, but fully realize that posting on social media creates an attack on all of us. So please stop so I can continue to enjoy the lifestyle I choose, and not lose it over your quest for 15 minutes of fame.

If my memory serves me correctly, the social media post that caused all the hullabaloo in BC was a video of a poor shot and the bear tumbling down the mountainside afterwards.

It's the Disney syndrome at work here. Everyone has their panties knotted up because Tim Brent posts a picture of him with Winnie the Poo but not one squeek about the video on Global news of the texas grandmother that shot a gator that was tethered to a tree via the hook stuck in its throat. I guess gators arent as cute as a bear.

Yes but that gator ate her cute miniature pony apparently so that made killing the toothy lizard "ok" I guess. I have no use for social media.

Sure it is, but if people think posting pictures or videos on social media is going to fight the disney syndrome they are dillusional. Point is, they are doing more harm than the supposed good they are trying to justify with cute sayings and claims of their right. I for one love to see pics of successful hunts and will congratulate anyone on them. But there is a place for it, and if they can't see the damage bragging on social media to thousands of strangers does, were all in trouble.

No good comes from it, lots of potential harm. So why poke the bear? We as a group are the ones who will lose.

for the record, i do not advocate to go and flood fb and the likes with pictures and videos of hunts and dead animals, i believe that if someone does do that, out of whatever reason they have to do so, i will come and congratulate and leave positive comment, and if i do see an anti making stupid ass comments, threats, innuendos or whatever, i will respond to those posts, defending anyone who has legally participated and ethically harvested whatever game they were after
no one has a right, whether on privet or public forum, to harras, belittle or bully anyone who is participating in a legal activity. period

Sure it will piss off some of the uneducated, and folks who simply disagree with hunting. For me, I don't really care.. there will always be a bee in their bonnet.. has been that way for years..
I say post your pics.. folks care way too much on what others think nowadays. Looks like it was a great hunt for sure... freezer once again, full of meat!
Big high five for Brent ~ would love the opportunity to hunt alongside Jim as well.. :sniper:

Price he pays as a public figure. I’m a nobody outfitter and have posted utterly dozens of Grizzly hunting photos to social media, and rarely get an ill comment after blocking the usual repeat offenders. I actually think it’s important hunting is tastefully shared in public, being careful to avoid kill shot videos and blood that the uninformed can understandably be offended by. Also important to show many photos of the process of the hunts aside from just the harvest.

Really should be a class action suit against twitter and Facebook for this. By allowing these comments they’re culpable for the crimes that are being committed (criminal threats)

It's my observation that a great deal of the public know nothing on the subject of hunting . Included in this is the fact that hunters contribute a great deal to conservation . The vast majority of these people think we are a bunch of Yahoos out shooting up road signs while drinking alcohol tearing around in Monster style pickup trucks. We need to change this image ! Promote ourselves in a good light that reflects what sort of people we are not the people they think we are !

social media is the scurg of human society. It allows uneducated people the ability to formulate opinions on anything that pleases them when knowing nothing of the subject. They are able to do it with total animity and zero conscious thought and perhaps in efforts to get rise out of the opposing side and nothing more.

I do not have a Facebook account nor ever had one and I choose forums like this one so I can discuss my opinions and ideals with people with the have a true knowledge of what they speak. I don't always agree with every subject from gun control to hunting ethics but at least the people I comunicate with understand the topic of discussion. I certainly don't see that on social media from our prime minister to the president of the United States to the Clingon left wing anti-hunter.

^this

heeeey, clingons would be pro hunting

in my simple mind it all comes down to one question.

At the end of all of this, did the hunting community gain or lose support from the general population because of this?

I don't care about the anti's, they will always be there. Its the 60% of the world that don't normally care one way or the other.

I know the answer is we lost. So we would have been better off without this happening, and every time it does, we lose a little more. Might not affect my generation, but sooner or later it will catch up to us.

Are you sure we lost ? Maybe In the court of opinion with animal rights groups but perhaps we won in other ways....pride in our heritage, help to inform the uninformed, perhaps the Facebook post sparked interest in someone that was dis- interested in the sport. Or maybe it spurred a conversation between some people for hunting with those who are against hunting and helped to enlighten others.

Hunting is at the core of humans, it has been since the dawn of time. Hopefully it will remain as part of us.

Besides the facebook yuppies need us to control the ungulate population to reduce their car repair bills when they clip them on the 400 series hwys, on the way home from the cottage. Hypocrites.....they kill more than most hunters ever will, perhaps they should stop driving their cars.

If that’s the case any activity that offends in some way would be naturally going extinct, leading us into a grey dystopian future where nothing but pursuits approved by the masses are permitted. People like to pretend that’s where we’re headed while hugging their guns but lots of trends prove that not to be the case. UFC, Boxing, R rated movies and HBO, Howard Stern, contact sports in general, legal weed, LGBT rights, and the resurgence of hunting all prove that theory wrong. You can be a fringe group that offends the majority and expand and remain viable, the worst thing you can do is hide until you don’t exist. Just apply appropriate respect and common sense even if you don’t receive it back from the other side.

Good post... very "Un-Chicken Little..."

Well I hope you guys are right, time will tell.
I don't think not inflaming the masses on social media is hiding. I'm far from hiding, but I also do offer great ammunition to the anti's. There is middle ground there. I for one don't need facebook fame. I'll keep it to friends and neighbours that I can carry on a reasonable conversation with explaining my beliefs on hunting and even share some game.

Showing a bunch of bambi lovers a large dead bear doesn't get the same output.
