Anybody shot one? I think I have an idea of what their laws are regarding storage/transportation, I just want to make sure there's nothing wonky that I might be missing.
I'm planning on shooting a match there in June.
Thanks
Thanks PMT,
Just to double check, I was told to have the match information/invitation along with an NRA Special Tournament approval in the locked container as well. To comply with NY state penal code.
Heard of this before?
Shoot them all the time. The last one was - today![]()
I lock my guns the same way they're locked here - trigger locked and in a locked case inside my unlocked range bag. Ammo is kept in plastic ammo boxes in my range bag - never had an issue.
Nothing wonky - just keep all of your paperwork in order. I use a zippered 3-ring binder with the clear plastic sleeves for everything.
Drive to US border, take off sunglasses, hand him your passport.
- Form 6NIA
- Border ATT
- Hunting License
- Match Invitations
- Photocopies of Registration Certificates
- Temporary Export Permit (green card from Canada Customs)
- Passport
Citizenship? Canadian
Where are you going? To ### Club, for a pistol match.
What are you bringing into the US? I have 1 (or 2) pistols(s) locked up in the back.
Do you have your ATF form? Yes (handing it to him) I have the Glock/Para/HK - 3rd gun on the list.
You may or may not get sent to secondary to verify serial numbers. Typically they hand our paperwork back and say goodbye.
BTW, for the benefit of everyone else reading this - US Customs had an exit check set up on the Niagara Falls bridge today.
How do I get this temporary Export permit from Canada Customs?
Do I have to call the CFO for a temp ATT every time I go to shoot?
Yes...
NY has some sticky laws... "Technically" it's illegal for someone without a NY "pistol lic." to posess a pistol under any circumstances save for the NRA thing, but... I've never had a problem nor have I heard of anyone having a problem shooting in NY.
I only ever shoot police matches in NY... Surrounded by local, state and federal agents... they all know I be Canadian. 'never been asked anything about my guns. Never hassled at the border...
PMT
I wasn't aware of the canada customs export permits, I've never been asked for them when re-entering Canada...Always thought reg certificates were good enough...Might have to look into this.
You should be able to get more than 7 on your ATT as well.
I have
Windsor, Cornwall, Sarnia, Sombra, Prescott, Cananoque 1000 island, Ft Erie, Queenston, Niagara Falls, Walpole Island, Kingston & Pearson Intl Airport.
Most of the Canadian Border Guards do not know the difference between a club ATT and a Border ATT, but they are becoming more knowledgable now that they are starting to carry handguns and are getting their own PAL's. You have NO right to carry your handguns to the border points with only a club permit. They may act on that if they want.
The CFO now needs your copy of your returned Form 6 before they will issue a Border permit. If you know the right people and are polite, it is a relatively painless process. The majority of the wait time spent is on the Form 6 going through the Department of Defense/BATF checks.
This I know...I was speaking specifically about the Border ATT. I have 12 crossings on mine, yet Kerrie has told PMT that he can only have maximum 7.
Not sure why you quoted me on this
Yes, this how I roll in Ontari-ari-ari-o. I assumed that this was understood as the OP asked specifically about shooting in NY, and his info shows he's in Brantford. Everything west of Ontario is pretty much a free-for-all anywayYou should point out you are taking about how it is done in Ontario.
You should point out you are taking about how it is done in Ontario. Out in BC we don't have "Club" ATT's or "Border" ATT's. I only have one LATT issued to me by Victoria. Good for five years, all Western Provinces, Yukon and the NWT, to any Gunsmith and to all Border points on my way to the US as long as I have a valid Form 6 and my Invitation to shoot.
All of the above, world class Salmon, Steelhead fishing five minnuts from my house, mountains and a Glacier to look at out my window. Life isn't all that bad. Well we still have Liberals or the NDP for provincial choices but that aside life is good. :>)
Take Care

Sorry, I was just reading PMT's list, and it indicated both a license and an invitation letter...so, if you have the invitation letter, you do not need the license, correct?
