+/- 1/10th of a grain

.30/30 used for deer at 75m - the square root of zilch.

6.5/.284 at 1,000m might be different.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that for most purposes, 1/10th of a grain really isn't that significant.
 
I would think you would need perfect aim, perfect air conditions, perfect recoil management, perfect rest, perfect rifle, and perfect cartridge loading to notice a difference.

A half-grain difference, I can usually tell, but 1/10 th is such a small amount that there are so many other random factors at play that it would likely get lost in the noise.

If your shooting is so good that it will pick up on 1/10th, go for it.
 
When metering out powder for hunting loads, my RCBS Chargemaster will once in a while, drop a charge that is .1 grains over.
I absolutely ignore this in any case with a capacity over 20 grains.
The difference in performance is virtually impossible to detect.
I tried Chronographing some loads in my 30-06 that varied + or - .1 grains.
There was just as much velocity variance in the loads that weighed exactly the same as there was in those with .2 grains difference.
There are so many factors to consider.
Powder weight is probably down the list a way, unless the difference is substantial.

I think it all depends on the size of the powder charge. IMHO, once you pass 50 grains or so, 1/10 of a grain makes no measurable differnce. At least that has been my experience with my rifles, my powder, my scale and my chronograph at my shooting bench at my range. YMMV.
 
When I did load development for my 17 Rem FB I went up in 1/10th of a grain to find the one I wanted an there was a noticeable difference. It's a very small case though.
 
Definitely not, although I don't know about compressed loads. Haven't tested many of those.
 
Yes, 1/10th grain is an absolute nothing with any type of rifle cartridge, with the possible exception of a 22 Hornet, or similar, which are critical at top loadings.
If it is accuracy you are thinking about, bedding of your rifle is far more important than minor changes in powder. If sporting weight rifle barrels have pressure on them at the front of the stock, it absorbs much of the vibrations of the barrel and small changes in powder won't change poi, except at considerable distance.

I've told of shooting a five shot group with my 30-06 and 4350 powder, with 4 grains differnce in powder between the hottest load and the lightest, but the five went into a 1.25" group at 100 yards.
I've been adjusting powder charges on my Marlin bolt action 243, to see how the rifle handles pressure. Point of impact stays the same at 100 yards, through a couple of grains of different powder charges. I took the stock off to look at things and was happy to see that Marlin built it with a nice saddle at the front of the stock, to put pressure on the barrel!

Which proves that 100 yard groups mean more or less nothing.

1/10th of a grain represents a much higher percentage increase in the smaller case. Using the Hodgon on-line data:

Using a 30 gr bullet and H4198, the max load for the .17 Rem FB is 15.9 gr. 1/10th of a gr would be about a 6% increase.

Using a 220 gr bullet and IMR 4831, the max load for the .300 Win Mag is 71.0 gr. 1/10th of a gr would be about 1/10 of a percentage point.

Your math is way off.

.1/15.9 = 0.006 or 0.6%, arguably not a significant variance. Though +/- .5 will likely cause some issues.
 
Open the photo and see the difference 3.5 grains makes at 200 metres from a .260 Remington starting at 38.0 to 41.5.

+/- 0.1 grain is nothing in fact loads in handgun type cartridges as low as 2.0 grains would not be able to tell the difference.

How many scales used by handloaders are guaranteed within that tolerance?
