1 MOA Challenge 2011

It is doable. But it is a lot harder than it sounds.

Once, I nearly did it with iron sights. I got nine V-bulls in a row (the V-bull is 0.9MOA in diameter), then shanked out the last shot for a 50.9V. That is your brain's way of telling you that your subconcious is the one in charge...

And I am not even sure if I ever was able to do it when I shot F-Class ten years ago (I shot a _few_ 50.10Vs, but only a very few; not sure if I ever got a 50.10V at 300 or not).

I highly recommend CGN'ers to take Maynard up on this challenge. Even if you "lose", you will have had an absolutely fantastic day on a really pretty range.

Definitely not an easy task, I had a go at it today even though the wind was rather high and gusty. I loaded up 10 rounds of cheap Hornady 55gr SPs with BL-C2 just before I went out as a test @ 200m and had fairly good results. While it wouldn't have won the challenge, wrong range and off target (no sigthers), I did get a 1.93" group out of them.

This is a great factory rig challenge and I'd be all in if it wasn't for the 24 hour drive.

The september dates I'm up north bear hunting but oct 1st sounds doable. I don't have a chance at taking your money on that range mr maynard. Lol ill take it on the skeet field tho. I just shot a very unimpressive 7.5" 10shot group at 300. Got a 2 1/4" 5 shot at 200 tho. I was happy with that and that was 120gr winchester factory ammo. Either way ill try to get out. Could you maybe get a 4'x8' target so I could hit something with my sks at 300 meters?

This is a pretty cool offer. I would take part even though it would be unfair for all others.

By unfair, I actually mean that I have never had a chance to shoot @ anything further out than 200 yards. Also, even if my rifle was 1/4 MOA, I'm sure I am at least 3/4 MOA. I really should start using a rear bag/rest.

Good on you maynard.

brybenn, skeet at 300m...your on. The target frames are 4ft square and the aiming mark is huge, you can't miss even with your SKS.

billard81, 300 yards/meters is as close as we get the the targets during competitions. Now I almost squeeked out a 1 moa group at 600m last week. Ended up shooting a 50.9V on a DCRA target, but I was using a target rifle with iron sights, off my elbows with a jacket and sling. Get yourself a rear bag and come out and give it a go.

50.9 at 600m, congratulations wow that is nice. You must have really been in the groove and having everything work just right for that. Bet it took an awfully long time to wipe the smile off of your face!

This past Sunday I was shooting at 600m and shot a pretty funny score. There was a fiercely random fishtailing wind which I certainly couldn't figure out how to read yet somehow I was shooting a whole bunch of Vs; at least until I finally got caught by a wind change and shot a 2 (!!!). I have only very, very rarely ever been caught badly enough at 500 or 600 to shoot a 3, and I don't think I've ever caught a 2 for wind before. But the conditions were certainly there to do it so I wasn't about to waste time with a pointless challenge. I ended up with a score of 47.7V, which actually seemed kinda hilarious to me.

I meant the skeet field at the kccc. Shotgunning is the only shooting sport I could beat ya in. 4' at 300 that seems doable with my sks. For this moa does it have to be in the center of the target or can a tight group be anywhere on the board?

Daniel, after hearing the comments from Des and Alain (both shot 50.8 right after) it was pretty hard to wipe the smile off. Too bad it was only one of two distances for the match. But on the bright side Gary Cassidy coached me to a 50.6 in the team match at 900m.

brybenn, anywhere on your own target is OK.

what does the v-bull target look and where is a website that i can print one off for free? I would like to try this on my own range to see if I have it in me, I'm sure the gun is more than capable.lol

The target dimensions are available from the DCRA rulebook. The targets themselves can be bought from the DCRA (about a dollar or two for one target).

The 300y/m target has a 22" diameter black aiming mark, and is on a sheet of paper about 30"x30" or so. This black aiming mark contains the 2-ring, the 3-ring, the 4-ring, the 5-ring (about 1.8 MOA in diameter) and the V-bull (about 0.9 MOA in diameter)

The 600y target has a 39" diameter aiming mark. It comes in two halves, which are about 40" x 22". The aiming black contains the 3-ring (about 6 MOA in diameter), the 4-ring (about 4 MOA in diameter), the 5-ring (about 2.2 MOA in diameter) and the V-bull (about 1.1 MOA in diameter).

As you can see these are big sheets of paper and it isn't very practical to print off these targets on a laser printer at home or even a large sheet laser printer.

The VLP can work-a guy shot the top F/TR score-69?V- in the last 900m match on Victoria Day, with his 1-7" .223 VLP shooting 90 VLD's. Beat the crap out of my 53.1V!

Had two more tries at this today, close but no luck on a 3" circle.
Hornady 55gr SP, 26.3 BL-C2, COAL 2.23 shot @ 300m in 5-15 km/h wind.

I'll try again next week with better bullets and maybe bring a wind flag along.

Steve - nicely done. Your group is just barely more than 3" wide, and it is about 3" high. Centred-up it won't quite fit in the 3" circle but it is pretty close.

I am the F-class activity captain for the NCRRA. PM me if anybody wants to try this at Connaught. We practice on the F-class targets with the 1/2 MOA. We have practices every wed evening and sunday morning (except during the nationals and our local competitions). Wed. is 300m and Sun. is 900m.

Hey Barry,

Are you putting the same offer on the table? Pay the guest fee and marker fee they they can produce a 1 MOA group at 300m?

Hi Trevor, just E-mail me when you want to show up. We start around 9 and lately we have been shooting till 2 or so. For anybody else who wants to try the best range in Canada, just PM me. Come and be my guest and the only fee we will charge is a $5 marker fee. As for you Darren, show up at the end of the month and see how many 1 MOA shots you can do! We have 3 days of shooting and a 900m smallest 5 shot group.
