Do they do anything? On my 10/22, I'm not convinced the bolt is smacking the bolt stop. There's no sign of wear on the stop, which I would expect if the bolt was smacking it for thousands of rounds.

dude the buffer i gave you is a tuffer buffer!
I have over 10,000 rounds on my Tuffer Buffer bolt buffer.
NOT a mark on it... just dirty.
for tuck sakes will the spending end for this thing....now you guys sold me on Tuffer Buffers. Where's the best place to get em??..
Put in a bolt buffer. I don't notice any difference. In fact, I'm getting more stovepipe jams than before. That could be due to differences in lubrication following a thorough cleaning. Or, it could be the PC parts I installed, hammer and sear. They came with different springs. The hammer spring was a lot more robust.
Are you using standard or high/hyper velocity .22 rds? I think if your going to fire the hyper velocity rnds the buffers are a must. I noticed a difference in my 10/22 as the action didn't make the hard clack and there was less jarring of the whole gun after installation. The bolt buffer is the only mod I have done to my 10/22 and its very reliable.
I've only shot American Eagle 40 gr solids through it so far. Around 250 rounds on Sunday. They just call them "High Velocity" not hyper. I wonder if the heavier hammer spring is causing the stovepipes? The other factor is that I used a different lube on the bolt. I used a light liquid gun oil instead of G96 that I previously used.
i shot cci mini mags out of mine and put in the buffer and did not like it , got some jams so i pulled it out.
