10/22 bolt

I'm starting a little build and looking around at the pieces I need and was wonder what does a high end 10/22 bolt like a Kidd do that a stock bolt doesn't? Is the difference in price worth it?
 
I'm not a 10/22 expert, but I believe most after market 10/22 bolts have a pinned/captive firing pin, which gives more consistent strikes. They should have proper headspace and squared/trued bolt face. Also, they usually have a contoured rear shoulder, which makes charging and cycling easier. Hopefully someone who actually knows something about 10/22's will chime in and correct me if I'm wrong.

You aren't wrong. The only thing I might add is that they're usually more true to spec - which helps consistency, and have polished bearing surfaces which reduces wear on the receiver.
 
Enefgee is correct on what he added to my post. Also, I've only owned one aftermarket bolt and it's a Dlask. I've been pleased with it and it seems like a very good product.

GB has had a number of quality issues in the past, somewhat expected when they are doing total redesigns. They always make it right if the products are sub par quality though - I bought one of their V-block barrels and couldn't get it to shoot properly at all, so they sent me a whole fusion receiver/barrel to make it right.

Their Canadian warranty/retailer is CSC in Calgary I believe, they have mentioned it several times in a bunch of places.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy GB products knowing that they will either work incredibly well - or they will go above and beyond to fix it.
 
I’ve seen lots of ####ty machine work on dlask products, DAR rec and charging handle (they went to auction). Not worth the hassle returning when they double charged me when I ordered in the first place.
 
All our current LR rimfire PRS are built from factory 10/22s... with the right barrel, bedding and ammo, they are shooting really well.

Factory triggers were worked over.

Even the extractors on these newer 10/22s work great.

I have tried and used several different bolts.

My most favorite is the tactical solutions bolt, but you have to get the receiver together with it. Dual charge rods. Also lets you put charge handle on left side of receiver. This is actually really nice while still holding your rifle with the trigger hand.

2nd would have to go to the volquartsen competition bolt. It is slick, and wipes of clean with no effort at all.

Have come to like the match bolt that comes together with the last shot hold open feature you add to your trigger in combo with their bolt. Nice bolt, and really nice having the bolt stay open after the last round. I liked it so much I made two of them.

Then the GB bolt comes in there somewhere. The firing pin is round like the tactical solutions, and just works better. IMO. I never could get their fusion system one to shoot just right, after using the other set ups and have walk away from their product less than impressed. Yes they had good customer service, but the product just didn't perform as expected.

I have run into that with some triggers as well, and by far the best has been the kidd trigger.

The bolt is important, but so is the receiver. The bolt has to be able to slide in it nicely and true. The barrel and the way it comes to the receiver has to mate properly as well, in the mix. The trigger, it is just nice to use a nice trigger to "pull" it all together.

I have moved on to the bolt world now, and only keeping my tactical solutions take down I built. The 10/22's have been a blast. Have fun with it.
 
I have put together 16 rimfire 10/22 variants in the last few years. Im going to list in order the components that have repeatedly shown themselves to be superior. Barrels are Kidd, McGowen,Volquartsen and then the junk! Although Ive never had the opportunity to get a Lilja which id try in a heartbeart,with my centerfire experience with them. Triggers is an easy one! KIDD PERIOD. Timney are great but not quite a KIDD and the VQ is anothergreat option. Heard great reviews about various trigger upgrades but wondere if any of the reviewers used a KIDD. Bolts are a no brainer, Volquartsen comp bolt hands down. Best design with a bolt like a centerfire and eliminating another friction point. Just SUPERIOR PERIORD. AS far as receivers the best are made from a solid billet of aluminum or stainless steel. Big difference in the aluminum is the grade used. 7075 T6 is mill spec and thats what U want or SS like the VQ which is awesome but over 3 times the price. If you buy all the proper components the gun will be well over $2400 when completed depending on the stock. Done properly theyll give a Vudoo a run for the money! I know as I own both.
 
I just got a tuf-22 and was planning on getting an IBI barrel for it and either an Oryx or MDT stock. It's the rest I'm trying to figure out. I'd like a Kidd trigger but damn they're spendy but it'll be for crps/orps so might have to bite the bullet. That's why I was kinda hoping that the bolt didn't matter, helps save a few bucks

Have you tried any of the Lothar barrels???

The cost of having fun and experimenting with different combinations adds up fast, and not always great returns!
