Zeus those butler creek steel lips are not junk lol. As you have learned the hard way, your rifle was dirty and had some burrs from the machining/building process and wasn't cleaned properly before your first outing. Once you took it apart with some care you were able to figure out your issue. A bit of trouble shooting and your in business. Personally I like to shoot some stingers for the first 50-100 rounds and then go to mini-mags for several hundred and then you'll be able to use bulk stuff, try some Blazers.
As for your BC mags, load em up and let em sit for week. That's all I did with mine and I haven't had any problems in 7-8 years. Those springs need to find there sweet spot. Stick with it, guns only get better with age.
