First off, I'm not a newb to 10/22's. I've had over 30 of them - and none remained stock. I've got folders, krinkers, nordics, etc... I love them, but I know they aren't precision rifles.

My problem is with a 16" barrel model. At 20 yards, 2 or 3 shots on top of each other, then it begins to throw them wherever it wants. Out of 10 shots, 4 or 5 will be where they are supposed to be, and the others are anywhere in a 6" circle at 20 yards.

I've tried different ammo; a variety of factory and aftermarket mags; even changed the scope. It's all the same. Oh and yes the gun is clean.

This particular gun is in a factory wood stock. It has a Hornet trigger group - something that I have in numerous other 10/22's. The 16" barrel was threaded and an A2 flash hider was added - something that I've done on numerous others before.

I just can't figure it out. If they were all spraying, that would be one thing; or if it was every other shot. But there's no pattern to it.

Any ideas???

Thanks
JB

Maybe the crown is bad... and after 3 rounds it gets dirty and sends them where ever it wants?....

Someone else had this problem with their 10/22 recently, they were getting 12" groups at 50 yards. Maybe a drop in quality control at Ruger??

Everything is tight. It doesn't matter if I clean the gun or leave it dirty. Half the shots are tack drivers and the others are scattergun.

I guess I'll just have to start making changes, one at a time.

I've already ruled out the mags and ammo as the culprit.

I've heard that the V-block should be torqued between 20-30 inch pounds. What I do with mine is start at 20 inch pounds and shoot. Then I keep tightening it until I reach 30 inch pounds and see if it changed the groupings at all. Then I go with the torque that produces the tightest group.

How do you clean your barrel? or do you just clean the chamber? Have you done any bolt mods (firing pin, extractor, true the bolt face, etc.)?
