10/22 Project Guns

No different than any other Ruger, although at this point you might have the added bonus of cutting your thumb! Still need to clean up some edges, but the magwell is clearanced for the mag release access. Maybe I should put an extension on it.

I should add that the mag is pretty much a failed attempt at a hi-cap straight mag. That is the other reason the magwell is as big as it is, I allowed for the use of BC 25 rounders.

Another teaser as of today. Gotta go to a birthday party, bored and waiting for the wife to get ready.

Based on that pic you will need to fix the stock in the extended position to avoid it being classified as restricted. I expect you knew that, but I figured I would throw it out there just in case.

Great work so far!

Yeah to keep it non restricted it won't collapse fully. Might be a waste of time making it adjustable, just because the whole point of the originals was to be compact. And it would save me the hassle of making a stop for it. Just weld it in the extended position, cause there's only a few inches difference between the two positions.

Do you have any pictures of the M1 or Thompson while you were building them you could share? The thompson 10-22 is something I've always wanted to try and do, maybe with no kits around I'll have to try to build my own

I'm not crazy about the 10/22, its not the first rimfire I usually grab when I want to go plink. However, it is a pretty versatile platform for customizing and I have a few for that. I have one of the Canadian Thompson kits on one, and another I turned into my interpretation of an M1 carbine.

I was one of the suckers that bought a promag despite all the bad press. And yes I was disappointed with its "performance". Figured there was no harm in trying to fix it, so I chopped it up and grafted a factory 10 rounder onto it (after redoing the internals). Its pretty ugly, I held it together with hot glue when I was testing and tuning it.

It works now, but it only holds 46. The reason I put the factory mag body on it was to use the feed lips. There is no mag that duplicates a factory one perfectly (although there are some that work quite well) and I figured this mag needed as much help as possible. A promag is designed poorly, the round changes angle three times as it feeds up out of the drum into the "neck" of the mag. I simply eliminated that, and smoothed up the internals quite a bit. And added a healthy shot of silicone lube to the whole works.

Some pics of the M1:

Started with a basic 10/22 stock (original alongside for comparison), shaped and removed material to fit the M1 parts I rounded up (buttplate, barrel band and retainer clip thingy):

Drilled, carved, chiselled out the buttstock for the sling and "oiler", which is actually just a piece of round tube I had laying around:

Rear sight, charging handle, upper handguard:

Had to take the sight completely apart to drill holes in the base (mounted via receiver factory holes). Had to anneal the base before drilling, wasn't even making a mark in it with a drill bit. Fasten base down to the receiver then re-assemble sight in place.

Charging handle is an old surplus part I found. Too much weight to actually make it functional (don't think the .22 would cycle it), so I chopped it down and pinned the remains to the top of the stock. In the same pic you can see the screw holding the handguard in place, I made a "nut" that fit the factory rear sight dovetail and ran the screw into that. I would like to make a wood handguard, but haven't gotten around to it yet.
