Hi folks, my friend bought a brand new 10/22 and 2 brand new Butler creek steel lip 25 rds mag.

We go to the range last weekend to try his rifle. We had a couple FTE but I don’t really care since I can install a better extractor in his rifle. We had a couple misfire (I mean NO indentation on the primer) but maybe it’s because we only clean the barrel before shooting, not the action.

But the real problem is FTF especially with the BC mags. The rounds often bend and/or do not eject correctly while a new round go the chamber. One out of ten and maybe more. We check the mag and they fit REALLY lose in the mag well. I mean we can move back and forth at least 1/8’’ maybe more.

I put those mags in my 20 years old ruger and they also had play but a little less. I shoot them and I had also FTF like the new 10/22.

We try the original ruger new mag in his rifle and it was a lot better but less than perfect.

So, I put one of my old 10 rounds mag in his rifle and the mag had a lot less play. Also, he try one of my 20 years old, 30 rounds plastic lip mag and he had absolutely no FTF and the mag was rock solid in the rifle. See the videos.

I also must say that we try 5 different brand of ammo with the same result, so, it’s not the ammo!

So, what do you think guys? Is it a mag problem, a rifle out of spec or maybe the two?? It’s my thinking that the rifle seem out of spec and even the mag. Did you ever experience this?

It’s his first rifle and he was totally angry about the performance, considering that my old rifle performed really well. We don’t know what to do. I’m not really bad about little tuning a gun but in this case…..

I hope I’m clear because English is not my first language:redface:

Any help will be appreciated!
Thanks

*As a side note, we had A LOT of fun with his also new, Ruger Scout Rifle!! So, he doesn’t hate Ruger, just the 10/22….:D

There is a break in period for 10/22's, shoot a box or two and let everything smooth out before you contact the dealer. Everyone of my 10/22 has functioned poorly out of the box, after the volq extractor and two 500 round boxes they operate really well. If it still does not work right after I would contact them, the original box mag works best compared to any of the after market ones.

I had grief w/ mine too. Was ready to ship it back but after a vey good cleaning and some polishing with my dremel tool it began to work the way I thought it should have to begin with. Good luck. Google "rimfirecentral" for lots of 10/22 tips and tricks.

I just ordered a Marauder kit and am getting my first 1022 for it soon as well ovrec...the Marauder mags are supposed to be good but you can only get one for now though .

It's just sad to have to tune a brand new gun....

I would say first the FTF is a mag issue. Happens to me alot with the plastic "hot" lipped mags, far less so with the steel lips. In conjunction with that though, the break-in period with the 10/22 is a real thing. Mine was failing to feed and extract quite a bit when I first got it. Now it does not, or only one every hundred or so. I only use stock mags or steel lips now too.

Also, a highly reccomended upgrade is the upgraded extractor. I can't remember the brand ("Exact Edge?"), but it is more precisely machined, and of a harder metal.

I also reccomend that you take a bit of abrasive pad, and smooth the inside for twenty minutes or so. Any rough machining you see, tiny bumps or tiny pores. Smooth it all out, clean it good, and oil it well.

A combination of these things will most likely solve your issue.

Return the mag you got for a replacement if you can.
Have a great day.

P.S. Second the rimfirecentral website, its a good one and worth a few hours of reading up on.

hey let me know how everything works with that marauder kit ok? what kind of 10/22 you buy, and expensive one? i was just gonna buy the cheap 227 doller one and throw the stock on so let me know how it all works out for you

The big thing is to break in the BC mags. Start by just loading 10 rounds, shoot a few hundred out like that, then load 15... eventually 20, then 25...

The reason is that the spring is too tight, and with a fully loaded mag, the other shells are making your 10/22 have problems pulling a round out. If you want to see what I mean, load 25, then try and move one out quickly with your fingers, it won't be easy, and when you do, the next round might stick a fraction of a second, which can also result in feeding problems.

The good news is that eventually the BC mags will work in, and then they'll fire virtually flawless for thousands of rounds.
