10/22 - Store cocked or not?

store all my guns decocked. dry firing a 10/22 is fine. everyone dry fires their 10/22 on empty mag. if you are still worried buy or make some dummy rounds to decock the gun
 
On all guns, always, ALWAYS, relieve the springs for storage, otherwise they take a "set".

Springs are worn out by cyclic loads (i.e. being repeatedly compressed and released), not by remaining in a compressed state.

Almost any sort of gun spring is always under load to some extent when it is installed in the gun, regardless of its state.

but......i can't seem to overcome the splinter in my mind of a tensioned spring being stored that way for too long.

"Wearing out" a spring is vastly different from "taking a set". These are two distinct things. E.g. a magazine spring that is held under full load tension for 4 or 5 years develops a set and will likely not feed the last rounds in the mag, hence the rule about relieving the stress by rotating "ready" mags at least once a year. And it can happen to firing pin springs too.

Properly designed springs don't take a set. If a spring is compressed such that it is stressed below the metal's yield strength, it will return to its original shape when the load is released. In general, fatigue is the mode of failure for parts that are repeatedly loaded and unloaded within the elastic limit. This is basic metallurgy.

If springs are taking a set from remaining compressed, this is a quality problem, not a storage problem.
