10/22 Tips & Tricks

I strongly believe that this guys YouTube video deserves to be on the sticky forum.
In fact I believe it should be on the Ruger main website showing how to disassemble & assemble a 10-22.

very good video, they need to do this with more firearms ! Clear instructions, good video quality and easy to see whats going on.

So I got 2 10/22's, one of which is crazy reliable and another stovepipes within 20 rounds. And this happens with ALL ammunition CCI, Federal Bulk, Federal Subsonic etc...

After careful investigation I noticed that the two extractors (both stock from Ruger) was very different. The top one from the image below was from the reliable 10/22.

As you can see, the extractor from the reliable 10/22 (upper) was far more "squared" compared to the stove piping 10/22 (lower).

From my understanding, for a direct blow back semi-auto, the extractor doesn't "pull" the casing out. The blow back itself is the mechanism that ejects the casing out of the chamber. However when the bolt slides all the way back, the extractor is what "tips" the casing out of the action. With the slightly rounded extractor, my casing was ejecting at a slight downward angle causing 1 in 20 casing to interfere with the lower edge of the action's ejection port...and therefore stovepipes. I then swapped the bolts, and the stovepipe problem pretty much followed the bolt/extractor.

Needless to say, I'll be swapping my bad extractor for a Volquartsen one soon. And if I were to buy another Ruger made 10/22 in the future, I'll be taking a close hard look at the extractor.

And what was Ruger thinking? The "Hook" end of the extractor should clearly been cut/broached not stamped!

Hope that helps,
Thoughts?

I have the same issue as well. I have watched a few YouTube videos on what can potentially be the cause. Google "Ruger 10/22 stovepipe". I adjusted a few things but haven't got back to the range to try.

Just an update. I cleaned, re lubricated, filed down slightly the magazine release, slightly bent the secondary extractor, etc. I was able to reduce the stovepipe from 2/10 to 1/10 (or less). I just purchased the Volquarsten extractor. Will try it out next week.

Just like other magazines, some of the 10/22 mags can use a little dressing up to help remove them from the receiver ... got this idea from another member here.

Install some magpuls!

These are Glock Speedpuls. And the fit great onto the bottom of the factory magazine.

A little bit of JB weld and your all set to go!

I know it’s sometimes annoying that is why I bought mag couplers and trimag. Hopefully that’s going to be easier for me.

Why would it be a bad idea? The Butler Creek 25 rd mags come from the factory ready to clip two together. If you can make a 50 rd, I don't see why there would be an issue making a 40 rounder. I wouldn't, but you can.

They cant be used in Canada anymore, alternatives are now only way.

I too ordered 10 shot mag couplers from Brownells and they said it’s o.k because they are not really gun-parts

Anyone have a stock 10/22 receiver for sale? (can be rough as it's going into a chassis) Can't seem to get the EE part of the forum to work....
