10mm for bear defense

Approaching adequate. I'd go for the 200gr. I was about to say solids, but the damn hollow points are most likely to fill with fur anyway and turn into solids. Frankly since the factory loads are tuned down since the first Norma loads, I'd load my own as hot as the barrel will take. Think heavy bullets and slow burning powder.

What do you think? is it adequate? what loads and bullet selection?

Only if you apply lots of Breakfree to the sides of the pistol..

That way when he stuffs it up...... it won't hurt so bad:D

Just juicing you a bit;) .. I had the task of using a full house 10mm to dispatch small (90lb) animals. It ain't enough.

I know a couple of guys who carry Glock 20's in the USA. They say it is ok.

I would venture to say that it is the best in terms of semi autos (other than a Deagle), but ideally you would want a shotgun or a lever rifle. Otherwise, get hot 10mm loads and I would opt for softpoints rather than hollowpoints.

10mm is used in the states as a Black Bear load.... i'm sure they're pretty toasty, and I'd go with a semiwad or a lead slug.... Glocks can't eat lead bullets (jackets only) but my Delta can, with ease.

Yeah, and if you are contemplating using a 10mm for bear defense make sure you also file down the front site flush. Otherwise, I hear they tear & hurt somethin' awful goin' in... :p

Unless you have a special permit ie) trapper/prospector etc. packing a hand gun while hunting is illegal in Canada.Be carefull what you post.Graham
Anyone can apply for a wilderness carry permit and there are many reasons why they are granted. 10mm is more than enough to down a grizz, just ask my dads hunting partner who had one drop within a couple of feet of him. However, I would only trust the reliability of a first gen glock in 10mm

ooooo, Can i have your guns too?

Spent a summer working in a comunity FULL of Prospectors. Lots of Carry permits. Lots of guys leaving the handcannon at home at takign a rifle/shotgun. Certainly nothing semi-auto. but whatever, good luck :D never shot a griz, but have seen a few poorly shot blacks that ate over a 1000grs of lead before stopping.

It was not guts or anything like that, It was a matter of life or death. It was my dad and his two hunting partners that were looking for a moose they had shot from about 500yds out and could not find because of nightfall and were searching for it the next day. My dad never saw the grizzly untill he heard shots, It charged at the guy who was in the center who was the only one who saw the grizz and was so scared that he missed twice with a 7mm mag browning bar. If it was not for the third guy having a glock and a really good shot, his hunting partner would not be standing today.

I read a few stories about them being effective on bears, but I have my doubts. It would probably be adequate on black bears but I think the Skull on a brown bear may be too much to ask from the 10mm. A friend of mine has an ATC and he was carrying a .45auto which I told him was a piss poor choice for bears so he switched to a 10mm.

C'mon Brian Give Us the Details...

Shown next to a 45acp cartridge, the 400 corbon is simply a necked down 45 casing to 40 calibre. Simply change out the barrel of your existing 1911 pistol and load up. Some recoil spring changes might also be nessecary for the heavier loads. Standard 1911 mags can be used for the 400 CorBon.

400 CorBon Ballistics
135 grain at 1,450 fps = 630ft/lbs
150 grain at 1,350 fps = 606ft/lbs
165 grain at 1,300 fps = 618ft/lbs
180 grain at 1,250 fps = 623ft/lbs
200 grain at 1,200 fps = 640ft/lbs

I respect the opinion of USMA grad Chuck Karwin who lives in bear country. He wrote an article on handguns for protection against bears. His opine was the Glock 29 would work; his advice was, if mauled, shoot the bear's neck out. I will die a happy man if I do not have to test Chuck Karwin's theory! Lastly, I am waiting for KKM to make a 10mm conversion barrel for my G30. Regards, Richard :D

Have you ever seen how fast a bear moves? if you can find the neck in all that thrashing teeth and fur you're not human.

but good luck with that.

I am licensed (with a ATC) for remote area carry and 2 of my handguns are 10mm's, a Colt Delta Elite and a Glock 20 with 190gr Sierra FPJ bullets or 200gr Hornady XTP's at an average velocity of 1300fps.

I also carry 44mag, 45 Colt and now a 454 Casull revolvers.

I have mostly stopped carrying the 10mm's except during the winter months when the bears are sleeping or if I'm jumping in and out of the truck a lot. Easier to slip a mag in and out of the gun then load and then have to unload 6 bullets each time.

10mm's are classed with the 41 mag in that they are good for hunting bears but are not really all that good for stopping an attack. Will they work "YES" they will. Are the best to carry "NO"....

That's why like today when I went out to one of my claims I carried my 45 Colt with 330gr WFNGC's @ 1300fps.

The 10mm's are the very best standard size semi-auto handgun cartridge available today and if the only handgun I could carry had to be a semi-auto it would be a 10mm and was for years.
