10mm whose else is hooked?

Way back in 1992 I remember reading a Shooting Times article about a brand new Glock model 20. I knew I wanted one before the article was finished! Unfortunately when I went to order one from John Hipwell ( aka Grumpy Wolverine ) I was informed that production was going to be on the back burner since Glock was ramping up to make the model 21 in 45 acp first.

John called a few months later to tell me my M20 arrived & I should receive it in about a week; man I was stoked when it arrived in it's little tuperware box with two 15 round mags all for the paltry sum of $550.00 at my door. Still have it after 24 years; still the first one I pick up when I open the gun cabinet. Even told the wife to pack it in the box with me when I'm on my way to the Pearly Gates....I may need it !
Long John

I've owned 4, and presently still have 1 Bren Ten, with 5 mags.

I started re-loading for it in early 1985 when I had to trim bases and expand mouths on a few different cowboy cases.

Shot a bunch of 40 out of my 10's, including the B10. Probably should not have done it, but the 40 was just out, and I didn't have a gun for it at that time.

Shot the 1992 SOF 3 gun match with my current B10. Those were gerrrrattte matches and week long events.

Owned a couple Deltas, 5" 610, and a few other variants. Should have bought a couple S&W guns, 1076, etc, but didn't.

So ya, I'm partial to the 10mm even though I'll load it to 40 specs. 165gr bullet of various types.

I'm going to get another Delta, just need to "pull the trigger".

I have owned several Glock 20s, I usually have at least two at any given time. I recently picked up a Glock 40 MOS that I am really enjoying. I have also bought and sold a 1006, 2 Thureon Defense 10mms, a Glock 29, EAA Witness and probably a couple I can't recall. Unfortunately I had a housefire that claimed my all time favourite 10mm, an STI Perfect 10. You could say I'm hooked on the cartridge for sure!

Had the G29 SF, love the size but it was a horrible shooter for my small hands.. my trigger finger and palm would go numb for every shot fired but I still love the ergonomics of it. Heard you could get rid of the finger sting with a trigger job? The pistol grip is a tod too short as well.

how so? not any difference in a 1911 frame

I added rubber wrap around grips to absorb some of the recoil, or I would have checkered the front strap.

Locals prefer the Delta to the G20 for ATC for some reason, for me its G20 for so many reason. The Delta is a very attractive pistol though.

Perhaps as a carry gun it fills a role, but since I like loading cartridges more towards their maximum it was just too snappy and awkward. I have large hands and the full size Glocks fit me well. The G29 was too short and my pinky would end up curled under. I know there are mag extensions but it was easier to simply sell it to buy something else, which at the time was a 1006. It too left me disappointed but I ended up selling for more than I paid so it's hard to complain!

Does anyone have a current version of the Delta Elite? just wondering if they made the barrel with a bit more support on the new ones.

I just installed a 3.5 pound spring and connector kit on my G20, on my trigger scale it break extremely cleanly at 3 pounds 2 ounces 10 times in a row... I suspect this one is gonna be a great shooter... JP.

Yes. That is hooked! Tell us about the G40 MOS. I have a G20 and I'm pretty sure I need a G40 MOS.

Is there an issue with the older ones bulging brass or some such?

I'm still deciding between Colt and SiG P220....in my dreams... (or after I sell at least 3 things)

The older deltas circa 1980 were like glocks, the barrels weren't as supported as much as they should have. Didn't really have a bulging issue, but hot loads were a bit of a concern. Just like the frames cracking at the slide stop, then the fixed that by cutting out the secton on the rails above where they cracked.

i haven't seen any of the latest barrels from the latest batches.

i like my Sig, love my deltas, but my FrankenTen is my mistress.

forgot about my orphaned s&w 1006

Im definitely hooked, finally got a fully supported barrel for the g20. Now starting to reload and develop proper 10mm ammo.

Only thing i still need is a gen3 to gen4 recoil spring adapter, stainless steel guide rod, and a heavier recoil spring.

If anyone has any experience with these items I'd like to hear your opinion.

Anytime I hear someone talk about 10mm pistols a part of me gets excited, and then dies a little when I remember that they likely are not talking about the Colt 6250 pistol or N80/N99.

There is nothing wrong with the stock Glock pistol. I have found the claims of heavier springs and aftermarket barrels to be massively overstated. I actually have had problems sooner with certain loads using the tighter "match" barrels sold by some. Unless the ramps on gen 1 and 2 Glocks were significantly different than now I don't see how you'd run into issues unless you were overloading the cartridge. In that case just buy something bigger... At the top end I'm currently pushing 135s at 1720fps and 180s at 1330. All through a stock Glock 20. Brass life is great, case head expansion is alway below .435" and primers are nice and flat but the pockets stay tight.

My Glock 40 does even better with its longer barrel and heavier slide though I haven't had time to retest all my usual loads. I did test the 135s though and got a very impressive 1830fps. I have had 6 G20s, I have ran multiple aftermarket barrels and used every spring weight you can buy all while measuring case head expansion and never saw any real difference. It's almost like Glock knew what they were doing when they developed their 10mm...!

I've noticed with my stock barrel the brass had a slight bulge, nothing like the glock smiles that I've seen on the net but it does have a slight noticable bulge. I just feel that the brass is being worked a little harder when resizing, I'd like to get as many load per brass as possible. I do load the 10mm close to max published loads, and when I finally get a chronograph I'll start experimenting with hotter loads. I think having a tighter chamber would help with that.

I did have some success with an aftermarket barrel. Like I said though most times the stock did as well or better. It's the springs that I consider a waste of money. Any real knowledge of gun design lends insight into how useless a few extra pounds of spring tension is as far as keeping a gun locked up. The biggest benefit I ever saw was not chasing my brass as far.

Awesome! Thanks for the great info. So basically a heavier spring is no big deal, from what you're saying. So with the stock rsa the g20 would be fine? The recoil from close to max loadings won't beat the frame to death or anything?

Thanks again for sharing your experience.

The most I got to through a Glock 20 was roughly 20,000 round of max and another 5000 light target loads. I used to burn tons of Blue Dot (11grns) over a 180grn FMJ, JHP or whatever. Usually ran about 1250-1300fps. I managed to break the large trigger pin (round count unknown, I figure about 10,000 as it kept running 100% until I noticed) and wear out a couple recoil springs. The springs would have worn out regardless of what gun I used.

Something to keep in mind as well as far as frame battering. That extra spring weight you use to slow down the slide helps speed it up when it is going the other way!

I have loaded ammo, Starline cases, a bunch of 180gr. 10mm bullets and a whack of BlueDot powder. Now all I need is a pistol...

I'm hoping that a reverse two-tone Sig P220 will appear in the near future... If I can't hold off, I may look into a Rock River Arms 1911 model...or maybe an EAA Witness.
