12 gauge question

im getting rid of my pump 12 gauge and am buying a semi-auto. im leaning away from a remington 1100 because i will be limited to a 2 3/4" round, but not sure how severe of a problem it would be running numerous 2 3/4" rounds through an 1187 set up for 3" rounds. i shoot alot of trap, and would be using 2 3/4" rounds but also alot of waterfowl and wonder if i need the 3" capable 1187?
 
I was listening in on that same conversation at the Kamloops gun show last weekend. After some discussion all 4 veteran shotgunners-one a trap/skeet champ, decided to stay with the 2-3/4inch. Nothing you cant kill with it and it has always been that way especially with the new bismuth loads. I was standing in front of a table that had a cherry mint Remmie 870 Wingmaster about 25-30years old with a 3in chamber. The guy wanted $500 for it so I bought a not so mint Wingmaster with a 2-34in for half that and will hunt it this fall after some time on the trap range. I will open up the full choke though so I can use steel shot. In a head to head test I found I could cycle my Wingmaster at 16 faster and more accurately than my dad could with his 1100. My dad was a good shot too. Just that the pump is more accurate to point I think. Much better for snap shots. Thought I saw an 1100 on the EE a day or two ago.
 
If you are going to shoot a lot of Trap with it, I would suggest a 391 Beretta.
 
Is the 1100 your staying away from, an older gun? If it's a used 1100 standard then it will cycle all 2 3/4" loads, from clays to magnums.Up to the 70's remington had 2 1100's. A standard and a magnum.The 1187 should cycle anything you put through it.
 
Another option you have is buy the 2 3/4" 1100 and get a Remington 3" chambered barrel that is only for 3" STEEL loads ONLY (there is a warning not to shoot 3" lead loads from these barrels because of the heavier shot charges), they are compatible with the 2 3/4" 1100 receiver and it comes with remchokes (Cabela's advertises these barrels). I am definitely considering picking one of these up for my 1100, if I can find one north of the border.

The truth is the truth, but your exactly right with the words "keep it clean". Seems to be a thing with remington gas auto's. The system they use is bound to collect a lot of crud.
 
Another vote for the Beretta 391 for an all round clays and hunting gun. Mine shoots everything from 3" mags right down to very light 7/8s ounce loads.

I've owned Remingtons and still own a 28 gauge 1100. The only reason I still have a Remington is because Beretta has not seen fit to produce the 391 in 28. If they ever do I'll be first in line to buy one.
 
I have an 11-87 chambered in the 3 1/2' mag and cycles light trap and chicken loads all day. For me the only option would be another 11-87.

But you would really rather have one in 16ga. Wouldn't you. ;)

I'm certainly not an expert, but my 11-87 (3-1/2" chamber) won't cycle consistently with the Winchester ammo that WalMart sells. It works every time with Federals, even though they both claim to have the same load. Now I see why I'm the only guy on the skeet field with a semi! Have to wait for another year to buy that O/U I wanted in the first place I guess.:)

You should try different Ammo. Other than that go out and buy a Beretta 391. :)
 
I have a 11-87 (on order. I talked to a couple of guy and they say they have no problems using the 2 3/4 federals. I hoping this is correct because who doesn't like to bust a few clays.

If you want to shoot steel for waterfowl, I would go with at least a 3" chamber. There are 2-3/4" steel loads out there that will work, IF they pattern well in your gun. There is a much wider selection of loads when you step up to 3", so finding one that patterns well should not be a problem. You have more options in 2-3/4" loads if you look at other types of non-toxic shot, but they will cost you more.
 
The 1100 is availbale in 3"

I personally would never own another 1100 or 11-87, way too much cleaning and maintaining involved!!

The only exception would be if I found a nice 28 at a reasonable price (or 410)
