12 vs 20 gauge - Recoil comparison & recommendations for a woman?

+1 on the fit being important.

There is a lot of leeway to be had by choosing different ammo on that end of the recoil equation so I would not be overly worried about the difference between 12ga and 20ga.

Having the gun fit you properly is going to have a lot more effect on weather or not you enjoy shooting it. Adding some weight and having a stock cut down are pretty simple and inexpensive for the improvement that is possible.

Its good to see not too many people harping on about the 410's. They can be good in some situations but I've seen more than one young or new shooter get very frustrated not being able to hit anything with them due to the tiny patterns that they throw.

All other things being equal:

1. The heavier the shotgun, less the recoil.

2. The higher-power the load, the heavier the recoil.

3. The better the weapon fits you, the less the recoil.

4. Autos have less perceived recoil than other types, AOTBE.

5. The bigger the bore, the heavier the recoil

6. High quality, properly fitted, recoil pads work.

Take it from there.

Sorry for the hijack but the g/fs new Hatsan Escort kicks like a MULE even for me......I think it is because the recoil pad just plain SUCKS! It feels like just hard plastic with barely any "squish" to it. How can I replace this, how much would it cost and how much of an improvement can I expect?

Thanks, UTAF

Check with the sporting shops see if they list a limbsaver for it. If not buy a grind to fit and sand it down with a beltsander. Recoil will be significantly less.

old thread but since it was brought up again...

Does the Remmington R3 recoil pad fit on the express? If it does then any recoil is solved. My model 700 30-06 came with one and you can shot prone with the but right on your clavical and you still feel absolutely nothing. most amazing recoil pad I have ever had the pleasure to shoot with. feels like it is spring loaded.

I did'nt spend an hour reading all of the comments, but if you spend $50 and get yourself a Limbsaver recoil pad, your 12 gauge will make it feel like a 28 gauge.
