Exactly 120 years ago, on April 28 1891
Russian Tsar Alexander III signed the order to start production and army supply of Mosin Narant rifles.
The decision has been made after very heavy testing the rifle in extreme conditions, in the frost and desert, dirt, slush... The simple and elegant solution of the constructors handled everything with brilliance. The rifle was designed by Russian Army Captain Sergei Ivanovich Mosin, with some design contributions from Belgian arms designer Leon Nagant.
The beginning of production started in Tula, Izhevsk, Sestrorentsk in Russia and in France at Manufacture Nationale d’Armes de Chаtelleraut.
Over 3 800 000 Mosin Nagant rifles were produced before 1905.
Along with Russian Empire, this rifle well served in Empire of Austria-Hungary, in Finland, in Chinese and Korean armies.
Later this rifle went through many modifications, short carbine was created in 1933 - known as M38, later - changed to M44 carbine with folding bayonet
Sniper rifle based on Mosin Nagant served Russian ( Soviet ) Army during almost 5 years long battle against fascism in WWII ( 1941 - 1945)
By the end of WWII over 17,000,000 1891/30 rifles had been manufactured!
Production of Mosin Nagats were handled in Poland, Hungary, Finland, Yugoslavia.
Currently Mosin Nagant still in service, all around the world, including Canada, thanks to well developed aftermarket for this rifle, relatively cheap and powerfull cartriges.
Happy Jubilee Mosin Nagant!
