Another reasonable option is the HK Sl8. The looks aren't for everyone, but can be changed if so desired. They are quite accurate, and the bull barrel is nice for target shooting. They can be had for under $2k on the EE. I liked mine when I had it.

The XCR is also a good choice. Lots of fun to shoot, AR mags are nice to be able to use.

I have no experience with the SG540, but I love my Swiss Arms more than any other black rifles I've owned. And the 540 is its Chilean cousin, so I would think it is pretty nice.

My thoughts would be
1. XCR
2. SG540
3. SL8

So far I have 1400$ saved up.

I've owned Mini 14's. SU 16's. I don't like T 97's (or any bull pup for that matter) I've owned M14's,

I like SKS's and own some. But not what I'm looking for here...

I'm considering a T81, but I kind of want something now.

What about FAMAE 540?

Are they good?

What about an XCR?

Are they good?

Feeling lost.

VZ58 hands down at that price range you have. Mine turned into my main shooter when I got it. Love it. Plus 5 year warranty mean you can really put it to use with little worries if you like high volume shooting.

If you're thinking of saving and upping the budget some, go look at the HK SL8. Great barrel, accurate and fun. Can order a magwell adapter to use std ar mags as well.

Not at all a fan. Shot my friends' one.

While they feel ok, I just hate bullpups.

Call it a personal taste. Allthough I know that closes a door on certain rifles, I just can't do an RFB, or Tavor, or T97, or Sub 2000

I said the same thing.... Once i got over the hype and set it up for me, you won't pry it out of my hands.

Just my opinion - VZ58 is a lot of fun, especially in 7.62x39, but the lack of a full length top rail just kills it for me. No great solution for mounting optics. They are a ton of fun though. I believe he said he already has one as well.

Me too. My buddy had a Tavor before me, and when I first shot it, it was meh. I've grown to love the rifle though, especially after the Tavor course in Calgary last fall. The gun just runs. Doesn't break, always feeds, don't have to fiddle with gas settings, no issues. I'm hard on rifles, but the Tavor can deal with it.

You've had a few guns that obviously didn't scratch the itch, and $1400 doesn't buy much for a back scratcher.
Save another $1000 and ask your Q again.

I have fewer guns than most but they're quality. Buy quality and the itch goes away.
My XCR was a good choice for me, but that budget opens many doors.

The itch doesn't seem to go away for me. I better get that checked out. haha

Just seen he posted after he had a VZ. Im a iron sights fan so for me its a non issues, Not sure about OP tho.

I'm in the same boat as salted but with a bit higher price range. To the guys that like the Tavor do you take it outside of the range? How is it for coyotes? I've been trying to decide between the XCR and the Tavor in the 5.56 and this thread really isn't helping haha. To many good things being said about both platforms.

@ malykar
That's an apple vs orange arguement.
You need to choose between bulpup and conventional.

I like the look of the Tavor, it makes it move so's to speak. I wanted one bad, went to Wanstalls and shouldered it and couldn't give it back fast enough. I've heard "it'll grow on you". Wtf, if it doesn't fit me now it won't fit me later.

If the Tavor fit me I'd a had one, but it doesn't, so I don't. My XCR does and always will. I've been pleased with it. Both are top shelf rifles, high/middle at least.;)

Anyways, no one else can choose for you. Do you want an apple or an orange?

Ah that means I have to find somewhere with these in stock, which doesn't seem to be an easy thing to do in southern Alberta. Besides I like apples and oranges haha!

Thanks for the advice I'll look into where has them in and go for a road trip!

one just not simply buy an nr black semi rifle
one must save for 12 months
then one must place an order with 30% deposit
then one must wait another 6 months before contacting seller about wtf where is my gun otherwise suffer wrath of shills on cgn

I've got my XCR keymod for sale. I liked the gun, just like my new sl8 more. It's really just the fact I didn't want a long range ar style rifle. The sl8 fits that bill more. I'll get an ar in 10" when mine sells.

The Tavor was great as well, just really couldn't get into bull pups.
