I am looking to purchase a pump action shotgun for range use (and just-in-case scenario). I am down to a few, namely: Winchester SXP Defender, CZ 612 HC-P, Rem 870 Home Defense, and the Canuck Commander Series. Canuck Commander is best value, but I am not sure of reliability. Rem 870 HD and Win SXP Defender seems to be very popular and priced reasonably. And lastly, CZ 612 HC-P has some solid reviews but has been discontinued and notably made in Turkey by Akkar and I am not sure of parts availability. Benelli Nova Tactical 12 GA 18.5" also appeals to me but some reviews points to a hit and miss quality. Any suggestion? Budget is $ 500-800.

Don’t overlook the Mossberg maverick88, I keep hearing it’s a solid gun for the price. Otherwise the SXP or 870 won’t do you wrong, I have a couple 870’s and a buddy has an SXP, both work well.

Given your price range, there is only one answer (in my opinion): Remington 870 Police (your can find them unfired or very lightly used on the EE for $700-$800).

There is one on the EE right now BNIB for $750 shipped

I forgot to add... drop-in extra barrel 26-28" also appeals to me. I am leaning towards Rem 870 HD and Win SXP Defender. The only thing I do not like with Rem 870 is the location of the action bar lock. Otherwise, easy choice. This brings Win SXP an advantage. Overall, I think they are even except for the aftermarket parts availability in favor of R870. However, I am not in a hurry and will be exploring few more options. I have to see the Canuck Defender/Commander series. Any owner who can share a review?

Did a lot of research on this topic Bear Defender 12 gauge Thread . Had lots of help from very knowledgeable members on here !
My decision Model 870 Police . Waiting on it’s arrival . If it was not 870 Police ld have went with Mossberg 590A1.

I tried out the weatherby PA-08TR . So far it works great very few moving parts . I was shopping for a 18 barrel for my maverick , ended up being cheaper to buy another shotgun . only negative is it's 4+1 vs my maverick 5+1

They were an amazing deal when they were $225-250 a few years ago. Now, with all the Turkish pump guns available and the fact the price is getting real close to a moss500 im not so sure...

That said, I do love mine and my buddy loves his. It's reliable, durable, affordable. I will probably sell mine at some point though, I've switched to shooting shotgun left handed and the cross bolt safety is a pain in my ass because of it, so I might look into trading up to a 500 for the tang safety.

OP I would take a hard look at the mossberg 500 2 and 3 barrel sets. One gun, many uses, well within your budget.

+1 for the 870. Every part is super easy to find/replace/upgrade. Action Bar Lock becomes easy to manipulate with use.

Isn't the 870 a ##### to replace the ejector?

I have a canuck defender regulator combo. Its actually a 13" barrel. Mobile chokes. 2 stocks. I keep the birds head grip on it mostly for around the house or camp. I do shoot skeet with it. I average 20 with the birdshead and 23 or 24 with the full stock. It had an issue right out the gate but its fine now. The O rings in the foreend keep it from rattling which i like. Very tight action thats smoothening out the more i use it. Itll see use turkey hunting this season. It is however loud. Much more muzzle blast than a 18.5" barrel. Over all i think its well worth the money i paid.

To avoid head ache I’d just have S&J or CDN Gunworx handle it and upgrade it completely with fluting, polishing, and police extractor. The pin holding all the goodies in the bolt is no joke to get out and needs to be re-installed by a gunsmith with a special punch that crimps it back in.

I think I’d still choose an 88 over the current line up of Turkish guns, although everyone that has a Hatsan pump says they’re the ones to buy.

I’m a lefty and the best thing I did on my 870’s was to drop in a Jumbo safety, with that in place it’s just a matter of getting used to the reach under movement. I find it easier to use my middle finger to click off the safety than my trigger finger, it’s a bit longer and you can pretty much keep your trigger finger on the guard while the middle finger curls under.

The ejector is more involved than on a Mossberg but if you watch a video on how to stake in the rivet it’s pretty straight forward, you need to buy the proper staking tools though.

If i wanted absolute reliability and could get just one shotgun it'd be the 14" Mossberg 590a1. Tough as nails and not ridiculously expensive.
