I'm selling a rifle and plan to upgrade an optic for my 25/06 to take advantage of the new barrel it will be receiving. Higher End optics are what I lack but I'm looking at some In the $11-1200 + tax range. So around $1400 shipped to my door
My choices so far are
Night force shv 3-10x42
Swarovski z3 3-10x42
Ziess in a similar range

Mind you this is a hunting rifle used for coyote, crows, wolves and sometimes deer or bear. Not a target rifle. Anyone have first hand comparisons with any of these.

Also interested to hear about other options for hunting scopes suited to shots from point blank to 700 yards

I have a Zeiss Conquest from a few years back that I'm very happy with and wouldn't hesitate to buy another for my hunting rifle. It holds zero on my 7mm Rem Mag awesome. I assume the new HD5's from Zeiss are even higher quality than the one I have.

I also looked at the Swarovski Z3 back then and was impressed. Would've bought one instead but I couldn't find the reticle I wanted in a Z3. I have no experience at all with the NF SHV so I can't say how it compares.

I bought the scope for my 7mm knowing full well that the longest shot I would likely ever take with the gun would be 400-500 yards. If I wanted to shoot further, I would've looked at different scope options. And that gun is used for hunting 100%, only targets it shoots are to sight in and make sure my zero is still in place at the start of hunting season.

If you want a varmint rifle that shoot out to 700y , I would go with a little bit more power than 10x , maybe 14x or 15x.

Don't count out the Veracity line from Burris. You get a lot of scope for your money.

I have the 2-10X42 but it also comes in a 3-15X50, 4-20X50 and 5-25X50 and it's a first focal plane scope with BDC reticle..

They range in price from about 900 to 1200 bucks (each model is about 100 buck step up).

Great glass, unbeatable warranty...

Fully agree with the Burris Veracity recommend. With its 30mm tube I found the optics to be even crisper and brighter than the XTR II which is a superb scope in its own right.

In my opinion, the Veracity is the best varmint scope in its price range. The reticle is simply awesome, having wind corrections and even better, a front focal plane. The turrets are covered for hunting but you can keep them off, too. The size is somewhat large but that's a small trade-off. I have one on my 257 Wby and can't think of a different scope I'd rather have on there.

I have that Swarovski and the 4-14 SHV, the Swarovski would be my choice of the ones you listed. Weight being a big factor. You should call Omer at plain sight solutions. He has some pretty good specials on Swarovskis right now

I had hunted with a Swarovski Z5 3.5-18x44 for 2 seasons, great optic. I sold it and now have a Bushnell LRHS 3-12x44 with G2 reticle mil/mil. Best hunting scope I've ever used. Has a zero stop, all kinds of elevation..clear crisp glass and the best reticle Ive seen on a hunting scope. George Gardner, PRS shooting legend had alot of input on this optic and it shows. This optic also has a no fault, no questions asked warranty...just like Vortex.
Plainsight has them instock around $1400 for the 3-12x44 I beleive...could be wrong.

Cheers!!

I've got a Meopta R1 4-16-44 ZD with the special mildot and illumination. It's mil mil and the glass is unreal. Thing is, I am an MOA guy. It messes me up trying to change to mils. I was thinking of selling it, it's only 3 months old and has only seen the range about 3 times. I'd be willing to sell it for 1200$ including shipping. I just need a quick sell before November. It cost me 1375 with tax and shipping 3 months ago. Comes with 30 year warrenty and I bought it through Omar at Precision optical. And he is one hell of a guy. Got all the paper work and box. The glass is Schott glass. Can see my holes in the target a t 300 yards. And it's great in low light. It has unreal contrast. At 600 yards looking at a roof while on my deck I could see the actual sloping between the trusses on the roof. Go to you tube and check Meopta review. One will pop up about Meopta equal to Zeiss victory. Really good review on this scope and the other bigger Meopta tactical. Just thought I'd throw this out there. If not I'll probably keep it through hunting season, only hunting the prairies for whitetail then put it up for sale after. Don't want to be messing around with my gear this close to hunting season. PM me if you would like to talk.

Sightron STAC 3-16X42 LRMOA

see my review on my website. If you are doing LR hunting on game, dialing is going to be important to make good hits.

Great scope, dirt cheap.

I would think that the reticle is too thin for hunting. At least for service rifle the tiny dot got lost on figure 11's at distance and was difficult to even pinpoint at 100-300 thru mirage.

So far, hasn't bothered me but this reticle graces all my rifles. Haven't heard any other complaints on hard to see against background... just the opposite.

But everyone will have their own personal likes and dislikes... it is just an option that will serve the OP well given the range of needs and uses.

I find Xmas tree reticles on some scopes to be cluttered and work against me when shooting LR.. but others love them so...

YMMV

Just to clarify, Meopta has Lifetime transferrable warranty in Canada, which means the new owner of a scope bought in th EE forum is still warranty.

You can get a very good scope from all of these manufacturers in that price bracket. It may not be a nightforce nxs, or a S&B but it also doesn't hurt the pocket as much. Don't be bullied by the naysayers who have $3k to spend, we all have different budgets and priorities.

Finding the center of a figure 11 at 200m kneeling is pretty hard when your reticle blends with the black blob your aiming at. Now my shooting buddies leopold with the fire dot, now that is a SR reticle!
