For no reason whatsoever. They did however engrave the right side slots with a QR code??? and the serial number. Here's a better image:

Thanks. I guess the designers must have just thought it looked cool...

this pistol does nothing for my inner gunny. the 1st gen I had, had such a bad bore (rifling iwas alsmost flat). Grouping at 25 yards was horrible, like a scattergun.
I brought this to the attention to the shop I bought it from and they looked at me like I was crazy, IT's you they said. At the time I was new in the pistol scene and knew very little (although I was a decent shot, I had nothing to compare it with) so off I went until a few weeks later, with a different pistol, also polymer and striker, started grouping myself like I knew I could...

I toss that MP garbage very shortly after, and I will never, ever, own any Smith and Wesson product ever again.

Rant over.

Are these not originally 17 round magazines? Wouldn't/shouldn't that make them that much easier to load? Am I missing something? I realize they're limited to 10 now.

No. S&W makes their 10 rounders with a high polymer base that reduces the mag capacity to 10 rounds. I have never had a base break on me but I am sure it has happened when used on cement floors. The spring size is the same for 10rds and 17rds btw. That is not the issue with the mags. If you can get a 17 round mag in the US and rivet it until you have time to do a proper plug job on the 17 rd standard mag do it. I have a couple now and prefer them to the regular 10 rd mags that go out to the States and Canada with 10 rd limitations on mag capacity.

The issue is the follower "legs" are to long and the follower will bottom out on the springs. The cure? Dremel down the base of the follower until you can load 10rds. Not ideal but it is what it is. This occurs on the new "black coated" 10 rd mags. The original "blued" mags did not have this problem. I am sure S&W knows about the issue and will likely deal with it when they run out of mag followers or change their suppliers.

The new guns and the last Gen 1 guns had the 1 - 10 twist which improves the accuracy of the guns significantly. The original versonal had 1 - 18 twist barrels. Folks with the 1 - 18 twist barrels can get new factory 1 - 1 barrels for around $85Cdn. That is what I paid for mine for my Pro version. I have four of the M&P's and they have proven to be excellent shooters. The Glock lovers will never admit the M&P's are beter designed guns but nothing new there. The guns are a good product designed for the LEO/Military market and work well for self defense in the US and are very popular as well as for IDPA SSP/ESP/CDP Divisions.

For most they would work reasonably well for IPSC Production but for that sport there are better and more expensive options IMHO eg CZ Shadow/85Combat/ 75B & Shadow2.

Thanks for the review, I just bought one and I'm very impressed with the pistol, I don't have an issue with the trigger other than the long take up. The fit and finish is very good, I have a Gen 4 Glock 19 and I have to say that I prefer the S&W, both of my 10 round magazines hold 10 rounds without any problems, maybe I got lucky or perhaps they revolved the issue. I usually modify all my firearms but I'll keep this one stock, maybe a sight change to Trijicon HD night sights in the future if the stock ones don't work out. As for the magazines you might want to consider ordering some pinned 10/17 factory magazines.

To the OP and anyone else that has one,can you drop the slide left hand?
Seen a couple vids on YouTube and it looks like with the new spring supported release, its impossible to drop the slide left hand.

The gun comes with a slide release lever on both sides of the gun. Both work.

There are some follower mods on youboob that show you just how to shorten the follower legs so that 10th round isn't so tough getting in. I own a late model Gen 1 and the mags are tight for that 10th round, I have to really push down on the Uplula loader to get it in. I may do the follower mod but would like have some new replacements in case I mess it up.

I am curious to feel the new 2.0 trigger, my late model 1.0 is pretty nice and it shoots extremely well.

Wester if I could not mess it up you won't be able to either. Trust me on that. Remember to take off the same amount, best you can, on both edges/front and back edges and you will be ok.

If you can breathe and walk at the same time you can do the follower mod.

Agreed.Mine were a PITA with the 10th round.
5 mins with some emery cloth and both mags fed 10 rounds and can be inserted with a closed slide...

Thanks for the reply btw about the slide release..I was aware that it still had it,but one video expressed that it was nearly impossible to drop it from left hand..I really wish they would've skipped out on the spring retention slide release, seems so unnecessary and just another small part that can go wrong or worse, missing.

Most slide releases have some sort of spring retention system. I an not sure how you get around it. I am no engineer but it seems to me you have to have something to hold the mag release down when the gun is firing. It is the mag follower that pushes the slide release into the gap in the slide, slide release aka slide stop. I guess it depends if the slide is coming or going. LOL

LOL, thanks for the vote of confidence. I may give it a go but being the persnickety type, I'll measure off a mil at a time and see how that works. And if I feel inspired I just might document it for posterity. ;)

Ah good to hear there others out there with the mechanical ability of a gnat. Fortunately this mod only requires removing material. Just pretend you are doing work on a watch and at the end you will feel lucky if you only break the watch a little bit ie you can get the back of the watch back on but it only tells the correct time twice a day. ;)

...I sat down with S&W representatives for a detailed examination of the pistol. Here are 12 things cops need to know...

The 4.25 inch barrel versions use the traditional inspection hole as a loaded chamber indicator, but the longer 5 inch barrel model uses a pivoting lever for tactile verification in dark conditions.
