Hello new member here, I'm mostly a shotgun guy being in southern Ontario. Anyways a couple months back I was working in London and dropped by Goble's Firearms and grabbed an old Cooey 840 in 16 gauge for a steal. I haven't had the chance to run any ammo through it but I'm hoping I can get suggestions/advice from fellow 16 gauge shooters. Sound off with where you are, what you hunt and what advice you have for a newbie!

Cheers,
Wulfgard

Welcome to Gunnutz. I am a 16 gauge type of guy. Canadian Tire offers some 16 gauge ammo. The Federal 1 oz. Game Load is a good performer and not too expensive. (around 14.00 a box I think) You will find no CHEAP 16 gauge ammo in Canada. I would suggest buying it by the flat from a dealer and try to get a discount on the volume purchase. If you are just shooting casual or small game hunting 3 or 4 boxes a year would suffice. I, too, have a Cooey model 84 in 16 gauge. Light to carry and loaded with Canadian nostalgia. About the only thing I can suggest to you to keep the Cooey running strong is to keep a good amount of grease on the hinge pin. This will stop wear and double the gun's life span (which is a very long time). Any kind of grease will do. Keep a little BLO on the wood also at the areas where the factory finish is getting thin. Enjoy the gun and enjoy the 16 gauge cartridge.

Thanks Darryl, I'll have to look into the Federal 1 oz, last time I bought ammo it was a Remington Game load #6s and it was $25/box at the SAIL in town where I've been buying 12 gauge and 22LR for years for a good prices. though the place I bought the gun sold me a box of the same stuff in #7.5 for $13, why would the price be almost double for a shot size difference?

I think it is because Gobles is a better place to deal. Shot size would have no bearing. Remington Game Loads are very good loads also.

I have a Tobin sxs in 16ga. CT does usually have shells, but only #6 shot. At least that's what I've found. My experience has been that the best source of 16ga ammo is gun shows. I've picked up shot sizes 4 through 8, and #1 buck. I've spotted slugs before too.

Remington Wingmaster in 16 Gauge here. My absolute favorite shotgun i own. It rusts like a bastard though. I gotta get it Cerakoted or something. Most of my ammo is the aforementioned Federal Game Loads from Canadian Tire and most times it's #6 because that's all i can find. But every once in a while i luck out with a batch of #4's.

Funny you should mention slugs, I actually cleaned the local SAIL out and they were the same price as 12 ga Sluggers. The gunsmith at SAIL told me it was the only shipment of 16 ga slugs they'd gotten in almost 3 years. I'm a lucky guy I guess.

And Darryl, what is BLO?

I have five 16 gauge guns, all SxS. Just sold a couple M12 16's a couple months ago. Love them all. Always on the look out for another right 16.

I own a few 16's, one new O/U and three vintage Sxs BP guns.
I hand load for all of them and grab up any factory stuff i find in the buy and sell adds as well.

16 gauge convert here. Got an H&R Pardner and Remington 11-48 in 16 gauge in the last six months. Bought a box of Remington slugs at Goble's and #6 Federals at the local CT, but I'm on the hunt for a few different boxes of 3+ dram, #4 or 5 high brass loads for Turkey hunting this spring. I'm stoked to pattern both in the next month or so at EESA in preparation for April 25!

I own 11 sixteen guns of which are 3 Merkel's and have been my go to guns for grouse and woodcock covers here in NB. I suspect that my newly acquired A5 Sweet Sixteen will assume that elevated position as it is indeed sweet and literally flies to the shoulder Ooops guess that makes an even 12. Not saying that 16ga is magic but I like the weight and seems to dispatch birds better -- matter of confidence I suspect!
Cheers, John

if you don't mind me asking what's a decent price for a new Sweet 16? I saw one in Ontario a couple hours from me for 1750 + tax I believe.

Only 16ga gun I have is a Remington 11-48 Skeet Gun. IIRC made 1958 or so. If you put hang tags on it, it could just about pass for new. Bought it because it was such a nice gun, and not a particularly common model.
