Hey All

So, a little over a week ago I finally started my own Blog. (www.thegundiary.com) Now, 2000 hits later, I am amazed by how interested people are in the potential range of the 22 Long Rifle. (My most popular article by far!)

So, to celebrate my new Blog, I have decided to order an accurate .17 HMR rifle. Here is the new setup:

* Savage TRR-SR with Millett LRS 6-25X56 (I have also ordered "shims" to ensure adequate adjustability)

I will be testing at different lengths with two cameras, (HD Contour on the Gun's rail system and protected T2i right next to the 36" x 36" steel target) and a Leupold 1000 rangefinder to disprove the critics...

I have access to a remote gravel pit that is massive. Any distance is possible and the high pit walls ensure almost no wind. I have stretched my existing .17 out to 200 yards with no problem, so here comes the big question:

What is the maximum range of a good .17 HMR rifle? I want to do 650 yards with 50/50 accuracy, is it possible given lots of time and ammo?

Should be interesting to see the opinions before I actually try it...

PS: I consider myself to be an "average" shot, but if I cannot reach 600 yards, I am going to bring in a friend who is an experienced long range shooter...

sounds interesting. Can't wait to see the results. That little pill will have no energy left what-so-ever. Might not even chip gong paint at that distance lol. I've shot mine out to 200 with good results accuracy wise.

Good question...and and interesting challenge you're taking on. With all that incoming gear, you're clearly keen on answering the question, which is pretty cool. :) Proof positive that there are incredibly diverse "goals" in the shooting world. Just awesome.

As for my the question, I'd echo what's been said here about having little/no energy by the time it's reaches it's target~assuming it does. With lost speed comes vulnerability to wind..so it's a double-whammy. The HMR is a cool round though, I'll be watching for the results. I'm sure you've read it elsewhere, but I've owned 2 HMRs...and one had a REAL preference for the 20 grains, the other...the .17s. Be sure to try both.

iv seen a video of 22wmr hitting 400yrd ballons. 17hmr should do the distance your talking about. i have a wmr 452 american witha 7-21x40 bushnell. once my order of ammo is in ill be trying to stretch it

A few years back i had a savage .17 hmr, i shot it out to 400 yards with .17gr ammo. they were tumbling at that range. So you might have better luck with the 20 gr. Good luck and i cant wait to see your results!!!!

I shot 300 yards on a dead calm day with a Savage TR. The group was just under 4 inches(3 shots).Nothing spectacular but I was surprised it didn't open up more. These aren't the shells this gun likes the best either.
I would like to try it farther out as well but have nowhere to go any farther where the wind wouldn't hinder the accuracy.
