17 hmr OR 22 wmr??!!

This debate has been going on for a while now, google it and you will find a lot of information (sorry for being a d*ck). I personally prefer the 17 HMR the 20grain which is the slowest of the 2 rounds it is offered in is still faster then the fastest grain .22WMR is offered in. HMR is ridiculously accurate and not just compared to a rimfire, and it is a flat shooting round. Personally in Toronto I do not have any problems finding both rounds for sale, and the difference in price here is HMR is only 1 dollar more. Both are hard hitting rounds, but HMR turns stuff inside out, the only thing WMR people can argue is the terminal velocity is better... I am a youngin so HMR has always been around the older guys cant seem to move away from WMR... HMR is the way of the future......

FLAME suite on, HMR ROCKS WMR all day anyday!

Either one is probably overkill for rabbits. Neither one is noticeably better in any real way on game the size of a rabbit. The .17s tend to be really accurate, but .22 is cheaper to buy.

Depends if you are for the eating or just varmint eradication. Both magnum rounds are overkill and destroy the rabbit to the point of being unconsumable. The "lowly" .22 is very sufficient for small game and much less costly.

If you have deep pockets, the .17 would be the better of the two. But personally, I have not found either more efficient than the .22 in the long run. I have removed thousands of varmints in the past 2 summers and never had the need for anything but a .22 out to 200 yards.

for rabbits go .22 lr Either of the HMR or Mag are over kill if your hunting. If eradicating well I'd go .17HMR for the better ballistics. Though the .22 Mag has the heavier bullets and suffers less from cross winds at distances then the .17 it comes down to what your using it for. I'm young and after a .22 mag for long range hunting of a mighty tasty bird I plan on trying to to use one on if my 12 gauge fails me :D Anyone in BC knows what I'm talking about.

Cheers

Shoot what you want. If you want to eat the rabbit, shoot it in the head. There's no such thing as overkill when it comes to headshots.

I had this decision a few years ago and the conclusion i came to was this.. 22 WMR..

Remington premiere ammo.. a 33gr V-Max at 2150 the 17 ammo is a 17gr at 2550. so I give up 400 FPS and double my bullet weight??? I will give that up any time any place..

Imagine a 30-06 using a 110 gr bullet doing 3500 FPS.. now if you could go to a 220gr doing 3100 instead of the usual 2500 or so.. wouldn't you give up the 400 FPS in that situation? but that is just my opinion..

And don't let any tell you any BS about the 17 being more accurate.. I run with my buddies and their 17s any day of the week.. whether one of us got laid the night before has more bearing on accuracy on any given day then the guns. But buy modern.. 22 Mag got a bad reputation but the new rifles are all on par.
