17 HMR scopes

What are you using it for? Target only ?

My tree rat gun was a 3-9

My target gun was a 6-24 (22lr and was using at 50 yards lol)

Maybe for gopher smashing a 4-16 would be nice.

What is everyone using for scope on their heavy barreled 17s?

I am putting together a savage 93r17 TR and was thinking a 4-16 or a 6-24.

Thoughts?

i put together a 17HMR last year with the new Ruger American Rimfire Target - that heavy barrel one that comes on that laminate stock.
i have on there right now a 3x9x40mm and i regretted that decision the first time i had it out.
i should have gone bigger, MUCH bigger!
that gun (caliber) is a laser and it can and should be allowed to stretch its legs out!
later this year im going to up-size that scope to 4-16 or a 6-24 or whatever is on sale when i go shopping.
the 3x9 just seems like a waste for the 17HMR.
that and my eyes are getting older every year, i need bigger scopes.
*sad face*

That was kinda my thinking. Was looking at a 4-16 viper

I just picked up a scorpion red hot 17 4-12 yesterday. It came with hmr range and dial turret, but I bought it for my 17 wsm. I sent the hmr turret back to scorpion today, and their sending me one for wsm. I had a couple of 3-9x32 marksman scopes (bought 1 and won the other in a shoot) and they were decent scopes. Haven't mounted this one yet but it is very clear glass, adjustments feel firm and are audible and looking through it last night just before dark it seems very good in low light conditions. Overall it seems like good quality scope to me.
I know I've read mixed reviews on them, and can't compare them to really high quality optics but for a low to mid quality scope, they seem good to me.

The choice of scope depends entirely on your intended purpose for the 17HMR. If hunting is a high priority, any variable scope with a bottom end greater than about 4 power will prove to be a liability, vis-a-vis target acquisition. Certainly a 6-24 or 6.5-20 would be a mistake unless the only hunting you were contemplating was in wide-open country--like for ground squirrels. On the other hand, if your main use will be target shooting, the higher-power scopes will be ideal. I have a Leupold 45x45mm. Competition scope on my .17HMR and have used it only for bench and target shooting. It's great for that, but would be useless for hunting.

Best solution, if affordable, would be two scopes: something like a 2.5-10 for hunting and a high-end variable or fixed-power for target work. If limited to one scope, the 4-16 power range would be a reasonable compromise, but would not be ideal for either application.

I have a 6-24 on mine. It's too much in the bush shooting grouse, and tracking moving gophers. ( at the top end is a bit small in my opinion ) 3-18 range is perfect.

I like 4.5-14X a lot! I always felt that it was a well balanced scope for a Rimfire Magnum caliber. Look for a Side Focus scope if possible. It's far easier to operate than a AO IMHO. I have a Burris FFII E1 on a Marlin 782 in WMR and it's a keeper.
