Accuracy like this at 100yd, using ammo priced less than $8.50 per box of 50 out of a factory $240 Marlin 717M2 semi-auto...what's not to like?

Coincidentally just fired these groups today while taking advantage of the nice weather. Amazing little round...fast, accurate, hard hitting...perfect for small varmints out to 130 yards or so.

Here are ten rounds rapid fire using a SnipePod instead of sandbags. Still very good (and cute little critter very unhappy) at 100yd:

I own one but have never shot it. I'm still tossed between this & a .22wmr both have it's +/- I personally just need something that will have the stopping power to 150yds. for small to mid sized game, lets say from gophers to yote for size. after that my Savage .223 come out to play. So I still might part with my .17hmr & jump on a .22wmr I have heard some comments from both sides But really need to hear from people that use both 17hmr & 22mag on the same applications.

DUH!!!! 17 Mach-2 I miss read the topic.... ;) yes I would say it's died in my area.

:agree:

I have the same gun.
Here is the way I look at it.
Same bullet, 244fps/$1 for the 17M2, or 170fps/$1 for the 17HMR. The M2 out of my 717 ran around 2200 fps. My friends savage 17HMR clocked at around 2550 fps. That is like comparing a 338 win mag to a 240 weatherby. I don't know why people haven't caught onto this. I shoot this gun the most when out gopher hunting. Accuracy is amazing and I hope that this cartridge doesn't fall like the 5mm did.

I have a .17hmr and am not really interested in replacing it with another small caliber. It does everything I need it to.

P.S. I use it to shoot wasp nests down from the barn ;)

I own 4 and also have a HMR and a .22 ruger. If you can shoot-and I mean shoot-and like to shoot lots-then this is the round for you. For 1/2 the cost of HMR you have very similar performance with a bit of a decrease in range but i've made a believer in people who've tried it. But everyone seems to think bigger is better and HMR is the way to go-till they have a 400+ gopher day and go broke.:nest:

I can't remember the last time I even scene one of these at a gun shop. I think the .17hornady has pretty made it extinct.

The 17 HMR came first, the Mach 2 followed a couple of years latter. From a retail perspective there is almost no interest in the Mach 2 and we will not inventory any guns in this caliber...special orders only. The 17 HMR ammo is similar in cost to premium 22 mag but the Mach 2 ammo is significantly more money than most 22 lr ammo. I think this was the biggest factor in almost killing this cartridge for sales. Even though the Mach 2 cartridge is an outstanding load it never caught on (sorta like Beta vs VHS when the Beta format was superior but VHS was marketed and distributed better thus killing the Beta). Phil.

I think one of the reasons it is not catching on is the fact that ammo never was widely available. Kind of a catch 22 I suppose, no one wants to stock ammo that doesn't move, no one wants to buy a gun that they can't buy ammo for everywhere.

I have one, I have a decent stock-pile of ammo for it. I try and top the stock-pile up when I can but ammo is not that easy to find sometimes. The last 3 bricks I bought I got at the CT in Red Deer.

I never got it-slightly less performance then the HMR but 1/2 the cost....guess I'm a cheap bastard loving this round then.:kickInTheNuts:

I have one because it's different - and it WORKS!

Not to mention, it's a close second to the HMR and at almost 1/2 the ammo price and just a few hundred fps slower - that's about 12% - it's hard to beat. Plus, rifles are cheap to buy and they're Awesome in the accuracy department (thanks for posting targets Farmer Harv).

It's deadly and accurate to 150yds. Even if I still had the HMR, I'd be reaching for a centerfire rifle for shots beyond this range in any case...

The 17 Mach-2 is so much fun to shoot - it's an amazingly potent round packed into that tiny cartridge!

I've had them all and the 17 Mach 2 is the best of the bunch!!!

Keep shooting the Mach-2! Seems that those who have tried it, love it, and are sticking to it! Well done!

As an HMR owner I'm a little bias but I heard of very impressive accuracy and bought one for crows, ground hogs and pop cans. I really don't think that the HMR has much advantage in killing power or accuracy but it does in effective range and even though I double for the ammo I'd rather be carrying an HMR because Ive confirmed kills at over 200 yards on crows, I doubt the mach II can do that.

I think the MachII was over looked by most rimfire lovers. But I think that the interest is coming back with this round. I have bought one last year in a Cooper SVT and it is a great rifle that I enjoy shooting. A bud of mine from Lethbridge came for a visit in January and wanted to try it out and I think he loved it.
Many folks have been trying to find this caliber in a CZ lately, to no avail. Really it is just another of the great variety of rimfires and if you love rimfire you may enjoy shooting this round as well. FS

Let us know how it does blazing prairie dogs!

Where in Canada do we have Prairie Dogs? Now if you are talking about gophers, it has already been on its maiden voyage to Sask. last May. I believe I blasted through a brick, which is a pile of loading into a 5 round mag. This year I have 2 new 10 rounders and an extra 5 rounder. FS

I think the main problem with this caliber in the future will be the reluctance for retailers to inventory any guns in stock. When the interest started to dry up most retailers had a difficult time in selling off old inventory and this went all the way back to the distributors who were selling them off at discounted prices to get rid of the existing inventory. We are only doing special orders with payment up front. Performance may be great but when sales are dismal, it's hard to rationalize keeping them on the shelf. Phil.
