.17 or .22 Hornet and why?

small sample size of one, but I hit a coyote with a 20gr Vmax 17 Hornet and only found a tuft of fur. Not a drop of blood

I switched to 25gr HP but never did shoot another dog before I sold the rifle

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions and comments so far.

While I appreciate the recommendations for wildcats such as the .221 Fireball, I really don't want to deal with all the fussing that accompanies a wildcat, been there, done that, no longer want the T-shirt.

I am only considering an off the shelf rifle with readily available ammunition and components.

I had an easier time finding 221 Fireball components than the Hornet.

I love my .17 Rem but I've never had a .22 Hornet to compare it to. I really like my 591 and 592 5mm mags as well. I'm lucky enough to still have about 2000 rounds of green and white box ammo for them as well as 2 bricks of the recent production Centurion ammo.

It’s about range, the 22 caliber boasts a much larger ballistic coefficient than the .17’s. If you keep it under 300 the 17’s are devastating.

I have 2 22 hornets and a 17 Rem. I am a hornet fan. I use the hornets lots, mostly gophers. I’ve shot a dozen or so coyotes with them. All while calling and never over 100 yds. My coyote rifles are both 243. It really depends on how and what you plan to shoot. Small game and rodents is where they shine. The 17 hornet is a capable cartridge within its limits. You have picked a couple of fun cartridges and will injoy either.

Even science says the 17whoregnat >22Hornet ;)

I have a 17 hornet heavy barrel and except for the noise you would hardly know you pulled the rigger, so you get to see the results through the scope

Big fat thumbs always hit.period.instead.of spacebar. Can't see 17 being more piddly than small 22 bullets. My issue with 22 hornet is either losing the cases or crushing them when sizing.

No organic targets here. Perhaps ravens. Can't shoot the turkey vultures, believe it or not, they are considered raptors.
