Absolutely correct on all counts... except that I still shoot MR even though I love M2...
AS far as the new Win 17 SM goes... 20 grains @ 3000 fps = 400 fte... for the same ammo cost I reload my K-Hornets with 35 grain @ 3100 fps = 747 fte... almost double the energy/performance and corresponding improved trajectory... or 45 grain @ 2900 fps = 840 fte... MORE than double the energy... why do I want the new Win SM???

If you reload then this new round makes no sense, but then, neither does the 17 HMR though for that matter.
But I don't have the option of reloading and nearly all centerfire ammo is about $1/round, (accurate hunting rounds not surplus garbage). With rimfire I dont bother collecting my brass or need to spend time developing a load (good and bad there cause its fun to tweak loads for optimum accuracy).
This new round promises to reach out another 75 yards over the 17 HMR for a slightly higher cost. Likely not worth getting for this summer as ammo avaliablity and rifle choices will be limited, but after it had been out for a year I think it will replace the HMR for my longer range gopher gun.

x2 When I'm hunting dirt pigs I like it quieter and with a rimfire its more challenging as well.
I dont think any one here takes in the account to reload ammo it's like your time is worth nothing just throwing it around that they can load all these rounds for cheaper but what about the time it takes to reload. To me time is money and that accounts for something and the price of the reloader and dies is never taken into account. Some of these guys that only load less than 100 rounds a year its not very cost effective to reload for them. Now dont get me wrong reloading has its advantages but so does more expensive rimfire. Also the 17 and 22 hornet are a buck a shot to buy factory loaded i bet the 17 wsm will be $20 a box of 50 40 cents a shot i can live with that if you want maybe you could keep all of your brass and sell it as scrap. I will buy it
I load thousands of rounds per year, and with the equipment that I use, it isn't all that time consuming. I already have the gear to reload my hunting, and target rounds, so my only added expenses to load my 22 Hornet are dies and a shellholder. Over a few thousand rounds, that cost doesn't amount to much at all.
Ballistically, my 22 Hornet is far superior to the 17WMR, and with the ability to tailor loads to my rifle, the odds are that I will enjoy superior accuracy as well.
Do you shoot??? Do you ENJOY time spent shooting... or is the time an expense to you??? Most of us love reloading... we do it during incliment whether (because reloaders generally also shoot more than non-reloaders, hmmmm)... there's nothing like making shiny brass rows while watching a movie (Clint Eastwood western) on a cold January night... I'd pay YOU to be able to do that.

Its a hobby in itself. Most of the time unless its your job you dont get paid to do a hobby.
Where did i go wrong in saying they both have there places. I said the guys that load less than 100 rounds a year is not very cost effective you're loading thousands of rounds a year that would make it very cost effective. Obviously this round wasn't manufactured for you just because it won't work for you doesn't mean it won't work for somebody else. I agree that you 22 hornet are ballistically superior to it as with the 17 hornet i also have a 22 hornet and plan on buying a 17 hornet but i like this option too.
Yes i do shoot and yes i enjoy it very much i enjoy it so much that i would rather shoot than reload. I do shoot a lot a year and I don't always have a lot of time. Thea extra time I do have I would rather spend shooting then and with my family that's just MY personal preference. For plinking and just average shooting I think this round would be good for SOME people MYSELF included. For hunting I custom handload my cartridges each has its place for some people obviously not you. I would rather do "somthing" with the Mrs. on a cold january night...... I'd think YOU MIGHT have to pay to do that.

Free time is free time and I am just saying that I myself would rather spend it shooting or doing something else besides reloading I don't enjoy reloading maybe you do and that's great for YOU. If you guys are so into reloading why even look in the rimfire fourm.
Reloaders load to shoot... to maximize performance, not to just squeeze the trigger... many people who love to shoot make the progression to reloading, so that their shooting can step up to the next level... if it was only about squeezing a trigger, most would only be shooting semi LR's with drums (that IS fun too).
I'm in rimfire because 90% of my shooting is rimfire... reloading came into this discussion because it is a significant factor on the viability of the 17 WSM... for reloaders, the round does not make sense (particularly for those with .223's and Hornets) and given that Winny white box .223 (45 grain rounds @ 3600 fps for $21/40) is readily available and the performance is VASTLY superior to the new rimfire round, even for non-reloaders, they had better keep the ammo cost down as low as possible and have some inexpensive models chambered for it.
I'm with Hoytcannon on this. The "more the merrier" I guess when it comes to available options and yes, if you have some aversion to centerfire this round should be very interesting to you. As someone said already~this round is the answer to a question nobody was asking. (or something like that) 17 Hornet is an idea that tickled my fancy for a short while, but with rifles in the $550-$700 range, and decent glass setting you back $300-$500+...you simply HAVE to look closer at what you're getting for the money. At least I do. I own a .223 already, so the answer is "nothing".

Because we all know that if you reload you arnt allowed to shoot rimfire.
OK I just received some specific info from one distributor about guns and ammo availibility and pricing. The first gun availble will be the Savage 17 WSM. It will be a blued/ synth. sporter barrel, accutrigger with an 8 round rotary mag...$375. Ammo will be 20 grn JHP or SP, 3000 FPS...@$19/ box of 50 and 25 grn SP, 2600 FPS...@$21/ box of 50. These descriptions and prices are as exact as I could nail down at the time. No ETA on availibility. We are anticipating fairly heavy demand and we have already placed our order for guns and ammo. Note Winchester is the exclusive ammo manufacturer at this time and Savage the only source of guns however we anticipate this to increase in the future. Phil.

I think I'll hold out for the .17 extra-super mondo-magnum!! That should hit the shelves in about 18 months.
