17 WSM - Savage B Mag

Shipping is typically $35-50 and you may get hot with brokerage fees. Last stock I ordered shipping was $50 and fees were $26.

Shipping is $45-$55 now... They ship postal, about half the orders get through without customs/tax... The other half you pay $10 handling + HST on the declared value. Shipping has been two weeks to Ontario, "IF" it slips through customs, if not you can add a week to ten days.

Well I picked up a Savage BMag mostly because of all the publicity and the $299 price. First impression was wow this thing is light. The forearm of the stock wiggles around like a sock on a clothes line in the wind. The barrel isn’t free floated and warped to the side of the barrel. I tried to mount a scope using Weaver rings on the bases supplied and it was a no go. The clips on the rings did not securely clamp to the bottom edge of the bases and the rings were too low for the bolt to open. So off I went back to the gun store to get a set of higher Burris rings. These did the trick but there is only a 16th inch clearance between the open bolt and the scope which doesn’t leave much room to properly grasp the weird bolt knob. The bolt is able to be closed down before it is fully pushed ahead therefore gouging into the plastic stock. This is the first rifle I’ve seen with a plastic click in trigger guard you have to remove to get at the action screws by pushing a tab with a screw driver ahead of the trigger. Another issue is the bolt is cocked by pushing down which requires a fair amount of pressure especially when you don’t have enough clearance to properly grab the bolt knob. I took out enough plastic from the hollow stock ribs to free float the bottom of the barrel and reinstalled it. I placed a wedge between the stock and the side of the barrel and used a hair dryer to heat it hoping to train it to center properly so it stays free floated. (LOL) Next is some sighting-in and grouping shots. I’m not too excited about getting one hollers from a $300 gun. I was just eager to have one in my hands to try for accuracy after all the hype of the new 17WSM.

So how did the shooting go and what grain bullet did you use?

I have one on order but won't get it for another 2-3 weeks. I have 6 box's of shells to arrive Friday. I am also thinking of getting a Boyd's gun stock. Just not sure what one. By the sounds of things it would be a great idea.

Well after waiting for over a week and half for savage customer service to give me the shipping label to send the keyholed shooter to I gave up. The customer service sucks. The good news is that the manager at the cabelas Winnipeg store read my post earlier and promised that the store would look after my problem and they did. I will say that I am very happy with the store and won't hesitate to shop there again. Thanks

I'm planning to do some shooting after the weekend. I'll be using the 20 grainers. A Boyds stock sounds like a plan.

I had no problem installing a Leupold M8 on my Bmag with Weaver 1" med rings. With the Leupold installed, the bolt barely reaches the widening portion of the eyepiece in the full rearward position and there is enough clearance to function even with the Bikini covers on. Once I slide the bolt forward, it totally clears the eyepiece and I can easily grasp the bolt handle, as in this position the handle is alongside the main 1" tube. The new Redfield Revolution 3-12x40 I ordered for this project has arrived so it'll be swapped out shortly so we'll see how it fits with these rings. I did take the Bmag out back and ran a few mags of 20gr through with no fails to feed, extract or fire and I hit all the baseball size snowballs I aimed at out to 100 yards or so (minute of coyote, lol) Now if only that Boyds stock would hurry up get here.

Think I will wait until some other manufacturer will bring out a rifle for this 17.
I do not like the issues associated with the Savage rifle for this cartridge. If the cartridge has promise and the ammo produced will be accurate, others will chamber for it. I imagine Winchester will in due time.
I see no point in buying the Savage POS, then install a new stock and spend money on various issues.
Rather wait until something nice and good comes along.

Does the Savage Bmag trigger guard and ammo clip click into the Boyds stock like it does on the Savage rifle? Any tinkering required?

For the magazine I'm sure there is a plastic clip for it to click into like the axis stocks have. Suppose to come with a metal trigger guard. Probably also like the axis.

I read an article on the 17wsm and the b-mag and the author stated that 2" groups were the norm for their test. Normally i am of the opinion the gun mags usualy sugar coat their tests a bit to pay the bills, but 2" lacks any sugar. I was out with a friend yesterday who has a savage 17 hmr and it was around the .75" to 1.25" with the ammo he knew it liked. (his gun hated winchester!!) Some winchester failed to fire up to 3 times in his rifle. If that is the only option for ammo I would avoid this latest and greatest until others find out if it is any good.

I was at a indoor 40 yard range with the Savage Bmag today. Sighted in the scope and tried a few first five shot groups. The groups varied from .592 to 1.541 inches with flyers or scattered like a shotgun pattern. The magazine is a learning curve to load. Didn't have any misfires or ejection problems but there is no consistent force opening the bolt after each shot. Sometimes it felt like the chamber was empty and other times I had to use really hard force to open the bolt which tells me that someone may be using the same machine to load powder for nail guns and rifle cartridges, or the brass is totally inconsistent.
By pure luck one group of five shots which was .592 inches must have been matched brass, powder and bullet. I don't have a reloading scale, sure would like to weigh some fired brass and loaded rounds to see what's going on. Anyway hopefully somebody else starts making ammo for the Super Mag rim fire. I'm not giving up on this rifle just yet, I'm thinking the gun has more accuracy potential with better ammo and stock. I've read on other sites there is a blaming game going on, Savage blames the ammo and Winchester blames the Bmags. I free floated the barrel. If you don't take out enough plastic just the weight of the barrel and action will push that flimsy stock up to touch the barrel. Savage sure messed up with that piece of plastic for a stock. Anyway, for $299 what does one expect after shooting Anschutz or Cooper rifles. It's great for bouncing milk jugs around at this point.

So I take it that a Boyd's stock is pretty much a must???

What grain ammo were you using?

I was using 20gr ammo . This evening I checked out the fired brass and found 50% have black residue on the brass back to the rim so that makes me think there is gas blowing back. Could be a sign of inconsistent powder charges or the nail gun brass is wacky. I hardly doubt the Bmag has a match grade chamber. That dollar store plastic stock is too finicky for consistent hold, any slight change positioning the rifle on the rests changes point of impact on the target. Could be Winchester and Savage jumped the gun!

Well I finally received my 17 Bmag. My first over all thoughts were that it was made cheap cause it was so light and the stock looked like it was warped to the left. I took it out to the range to try it out and I have to say at first I hated the rotary magazine with a passion. It was hard to load but after 30 some rounds it got easier. Not sure if it broke it in or if I just found the right technique. The Bolt takes some getting use too but gets better with time. The first 20 rounds went to setting up my scope as it was not bore sighted. After it was tuned in right, i found it was shooting pretty good up to 5 rounds in a row but then I got strays. i think possibly the barrel was heating up. I am not an overly experienced shooter but besides the strays I was getting 1-1.5 inch groups at 100 yards. I have to say I cannot complain about that. That was using 20 gr ammo. I tried the 25gr after and found the bullet was dropping about a foot lower without adjusting my scope.

The ammo on the other hand could probably use some work. I had 6 FF out of 50.

I think I will try it out a few times more but I think I will get a Boyds stock cause I find the one that came with it too light. I like a little weight myself.

Hope this helps others.

Did anyone actually get a new stock for this thing? Interested if that will fix my issues, or if I just need to go get my money back.
