17 WSM - Savage B Mag

6-8 inch group with 20 gr, 8-10 inch group with 25 gr at 100 yds, off a bench rest. 5 round groups. No consistency or grouping of any sort. My stock isn't warped to the point of touching the barrel. Seems to be free floating to me.
 
Wow that is bad. Was it really windy by any chance? I must have got one in a few that shoots ok. Have you gone out more than once? How many rounds did you put through it?

If it was windy mush have been 50 km+ or something. Even my hmr shoots pretty good in 40-50ish km winds.
 
Check the ammo, ive got some here that seem to have a huge crimp on some and almost no crimp on the other, maybe that might be the golden ticket to making this thing work.
 
So….. maybe wait until the shop has a different batch of ammo? I have a hard time thinking it is the rifle, but I am not an expert.
 
My stock has not shipped yet, but I cannot wait for it to get here. I have 150 rds through mine so far and had 2 fail to extract which turned out to be the case splitting. I have had a couple of number 7 rounds in the mag not come over all the way, but is suspect that that might fix itself as it sees more wear.

As far as bullets mine likes the 20 grain much better then the 25, but both are acceptable to me. My 9 yr old son loves it and he is able to hit 4 clay pigeons with 5 shots at 100yrds. Once the barrel breaks in and with the better stock, I think it will be a great little shooter for what it is. I have no problem hitting small pop bottles out to 150 yards with 90% success rate. I do notice as the barrel warms up the flyers become more prominent.

For $300, I was expecting to put work into it, heck for a $750 gun I would expect to put work into it to get it to shoot the way I want it to. The only rifle I have purchased that did not require work was my sako.

As for ammunition, it will be interesting to see if anyone else will make it, and if another rifle manufacture comes out with one in this clambering, I can see myself with 2.
 
Great thread guys....I have been wanting the B Mag for a year now and reading everything I could on it. Nice to hear they are now somewhat available in Canada.

Reading about the issues on Rimfire Central scared me a bit so I will wait for a while to see if any other makers come on board in the $400- $600 range.

Would love to see an H&R single come out. In the meantime I just picked this up at LeBaron a month ago...H&R in 17HMR....I will enjoy it for now and may ream it out to 17 WSM as others have with some good success.

The Boyds Rimfire Hunter Bmag stock arrived and I was able to do a quick install...here's a cell pic.

It will require a tiny bit of fitting for the safety & the bottom of the mag well needs to be deepened a touch. I topped it with a new Redfield 4-12x40 in the Weaver rings used previously.

Turns out my barrel wasn't as free floating as i had thought. Sanded out the barrel channel in the stock using in a 3/4" dowel as a sanding block. that helped a lot. Was down to 3" group at 100 yds with a bipod off the bench.
 
That stock looks Great!!. I thnk I'll pass on this Caliber until some better ammo comes along however. In my .17 HMR I had MANY FTF, with the Winchester ammo. 5 with tith fmj and 8 with the HP. My gun ( 93R SR-TRR) will NEVER , EVER, see ANY winchester amo again. Hornady all the way!!

My B mag got good groups out to 300 meters, very accurate. The bolt is hard to manipulate, so i replaced the handle with a tactical bolt handle from Glades Armoury. Ive never owned a Savage and have a Winchester 1885 in 17 WSM on order. I didn't want to wait until fall to check out this new ammo so i bought the B Mag. heard nothing but bad about Savage so I was very surprised to have a properly functioning accurate B mag out of the box. Sounds like luck of the draw. 1st and only Savage I will ever own though.

What kind of groups are you getting??
 
Turned out all I had to do was open up the mag well slightly with the Dremel to get the mag to click into place properly and the safety worked fine. My wife & I played with the Bmag the other day using Shoot N-C 5.5" target stickers placed on a 3gal bucket at 100yds. 5 shot groups averaged 1 1/2" with the 20gr ammo. The 25gr did worse with 2 1/2" being the norm. I also had 5 split cases (20gr loads) out of one box. Shoots ok and would be another fun rimfire to whack gophers with :)
