17 WSM wow!

And what's wrong with mentioning something else that is very similar? The hornet, WSM, and hmr, where all talked about in comparison. Nothing wrong with comparing cartridges. So what if its the "rimfire section" I'm sure in other sections, things may mentioned as well. Kind of like how hunting and reloading are always mentioned together, even though they have seperate sections.

Considering this is the rimfire forum I'm wondering how many more times the Hornet is going to get talked about to people that clearly aren't interested.

Well B. this isnt new and reading comprehension is difficult for many! Apparently shooting rimfire cartridges that are only available thru retail is mind boggling. Buy a couple hundred, shoot them, buy more and repeat or just buy many cases like I do and dont worry about it, till your down to your last case.

Exactly, most shooters have both rimfire and centerfire, and are open to all similar options.

There is no especially good rimfire caliber. It's the nature of the beast.

All rimfire ammo, regardless of caliber, should be expected to have a lot of variation in how it shoots. This will be particularly true of ammo that's not made to be match ammo. But even match ammo can have poor consistency.

No worries... as long we're talking guns and not politic, I'm sure everyone will enjoy the conversation... If not, there's always the option to just skip the thread.
- Personally, as much as I enjoy the Hornet... for volume dispatching of gophers, I'd still go with the 22lr or 17hmr.

Where can you get ammo? Seems sold out everhwere

(My opinion)

Superior to 17HMR in every way.

This is another example of Hornady flooding the market. They have done this with the 6.5 "Needmore"; a reduncant round in the face of the 6.5 x 55 and the .260 remington. Can no longer find those either in most places; they are trying to do the same with the 6mm and now the .22 I am sure to try and get market share away for two other classics, the .243 and the .22-250. They are a marketing powerhouse. 17 HMR has eclipsed the the 17 WSM to where it is no longer viable to make ammo for it.

A side note; having hand loaded for almost 50 years, I have never been able to get the accuracy out of Hornady bullets in 7 x 57, 6.5 x 55, .22 (both .223 and .22-250) that I can with Sierra Speer and Barns.

Again. my opinion, but Hornady seems to be powered by wind and s**t.

That should start a fire-storm.

It is the standard whereby all .17s are measured.

I talked to a rep at Ruger today. They are still making 17 WSM and although I am highly considering doubling down and buying a 17 Hornet as well I feel like if Ruger is still making the guns, somebody is making the ammo. Just a matter of time before it starts coming here again.

I would 100% buy a wsm if someone made a high end bolt aaction. I have a B-mag and i absolutely love the cartridge. The rifle... not so much. I bought a case of ammo at a local co-op for 18.50$ per box but now they are all gone lol. When i do find ammo its 40$ per box now. Kinda sucks. It really got expensive in a year or 2. Ive decided to go for a hornet instead because of how expensive the ammo for a 17 wsm is now and the lack of well made rifles in the caliber.

I had a B Mag for a couple years when they first came out, loved the 17 WSM fast and flat shooting, flipped gophers 3' in the air, however the B Mag was not a smooth gun at all, bolt was sloppy and it didn't feed very smooth, typical of most savage rifles I have had, fit and finish was terrible and the tuperware stock they put it in was flimsy and had a lot of flex in it, typical at a time when gun makers were scrambling to make affordable ( AKA cheap ) rifles. The cartridge itself was great but nobody made a good gun for it. My 10 year old CZ 455 varmint in 17 HMR has well over 10,000 rounds through it and will still take the head off a gopher at 100 yards if I do my part, it's my go to when I head for the gopher patch.
