ive got a savage93 17 hmr with bull barrel and i cant get better than 2.5-3" groups at 100 yards was expecting better ?is it normal

that's what i was hoping for but i'll shoot one bull than one 3' right 2" down than one 3"right 2" up than another bull and so on

All of mine do 1" or less at 100 yards, when my technique and concentration are on.

I would suspect a problem with;

1. technique
2. loose mounts/scope
3. action screws over torqued

Give those a try and see if things improve.

i do 1" and less with my 308 and 3006 scope and mounts are tight but i did take the stock apart to set the trigger so maybe the torque is off .what should it be at? thanks for the help guys

I like 12 pounds/12 pounds... it is a good place to start anyway.

What ammo are you using? Most HMRs I've tried show a strong preference for one over the others. My CZ liked 20gr. more than the 17gr....as much as I tried to convince it otherwise. :)

I had a similar issue with my 10/22. Turns out the crap scope rings I was using were ever so slightly loose and the scope was moving an unnoticeable amount after every shot.

I don't know what you're using for sights/optics, but it may be worth a look.

My 93R17 likes 17 grain Hornady the best. I have shot 1/2 inch groups at 100 with this ammo.

Mine also likes the 17 gr. Hornady - tighten your scope down again and play with ammo a bit. 1 inch should be easily doable.

Also - how windy was it? wind can throw the 17 a fair bit at that distance.

Aside from checking the mounts and rings I have heard the 17s foul faster than other bores so it could just need a good cleaning.
Something is definitely wrong though those Savage .17s shoot very well

i tried cleaning it. i have a Mueller 4.5-14×40AO Tactical mounted on burris zee rings .i only tried hornady 17gr and also winchester supreme 17gr all on dead calm days. il try to torque the stock one night this week and see from there. i kinda hope its the stock cause i like the tacticool ones lol

the 17 gn. hornady does pretty poor for me. at least this lot... ;-) im finding the 20 gn hornady the best.

and all this talk about ammo brands, i dunno. Do you guys know all the .17 stuff is basically loaded at the same facility? and almost all the bullets are hornady of some sort? (if not all).

after doing ALOT of testing, ive come to the conclusion that the brand name has alot LESS to do with anything.... Its more about the lot# of the ammo were using. (IE): ive tried 17 gn hornady and it performed great. Then after i ran out, i got more, and it shot differently. It turns out it was from a different lot, and therefore the spec was different, I suggest going over to .17 HMR dot net and checking it out there, there's a couple threads on just this subject. And a sticky explaining the loading of the ammo....

here's a c&p of that initial post....

From Linda Olin:

" CCI, Federal, Winchester, Remington and Hornady all loaded here at CCI in Lewiston, Idaho with a V-max bullet are identical, with the exception of tip color. Manufactured on the same equip, to the same ballistic specs, using the same components other than color of the tip of the bullets. Obviously the shellcase 'head stamp' and packaging would be different on the various products. "

there you go. and after reading this, it made sense to me..... what im doing now, is when i go out and buy ammo, ill buy three boxes of different stuff, what i usually have good luck with, and if one shoots better then the rest, ill go back and buy up a bunch of it, providing its from the same lot...... and the fact that i find the remington stuff a couple bucks more a box, doesnt add up.... ;-(

Ours ALL prefer Hornady 20 grain XTP's also, after testing 10 different loads form CCI, Winchester, Hornady and Remington... Winchester 20 grain Gameppoints were second.

Get ammo on the EE...

I got almost 4000 rounds this past winter in two different deals for around $675 or so shipped.

Retail price would of been over $1000 plus tax even at a decent price and upnorth the prices got really stupid for a while (last couple of years between 17.99-19.99 per box of 50 everywhere except walmart) so I saved even more, TONS of cash actually buying on the EE.

When I sighted mine in (savage fvss but now with boyds stock) It was shooting an inch or less at 100 yards. Dont really shoot paper with it so I cant really say whats the most accurate but winchester is a major problem in my gun. I really like the federal with the tnt(seems to be the same as cci tnt but $1 cheaper) It does gophers in real good. If I can smack a gopher thats all the accuracy I need.
