I totally agree with you Boomer, the heavier bullets have less of a powder charge so in theory you dont have much if anymore back pressure, i think alot of people just "think" it will hurt them because thats what they have heard from other people on the internet, my new norinco m14 chewed up a box of 180's with no prob, and i would not be afraid to shoot them in it, most Gunshop owners that have experience with these rifles will tell you that 180's wont hurt them as well.
gun shop owners.....??? how many armorers have you talked to about shooting 180's in a stock m14 type rifle?? The advice you are giving folks about using 180 gr bullets in the m14s/m305 ..... is contrary to what the actual experts state.
I could care less what you personally shoot in your rifle...... but a gun shop owner is the last guy i'll take advice from if what he tells me goes against all the armorers and match shooters recommendations.
Guys, if you want the goods on what you can and can not, or should not do with your rifles..... forget all the crap you read here..... from me included..... and go study the works of Jerry Kunhaussen, Scott Duff, John Miller and that zediker guy..... then go cruise the m14-forum.c and check out what those guys have to say about using your 180 gr commercial, saami spec loads in an m14...... you will soon learn, if yer smart, that you won't be listening to the guys on the net that say...... it works fine in my rifle.....
I do apologize for the rant.... it is not aimed at anyone in particular..... but gawd damn, how many times do us guys that really know these rifles have to set you all straight with this 180 gr thing....... I mean Geebus
I kill moose with 165 gr bullets......... dead as a door nail....... why do you need to go higher IF there is documentation to back up the statemant that 180 gr is not good for your rifle..... ? don't take my word for it..... go study the history and development from the match shooting perspective and armorers shop manuals...... the m14 rifle, in NM configuration notoriously loved to be fed 168 gr SMK and there is much historical documentation to that fact.
