180 grainers in the M14?

I totally agree with you Boomer, the heavier bullets have less of a powder charge so in theory you dont have much if anymore back pressure, i think alot of people just "think" it will hurt them because thats what they have heard from other people on the internet, my new norinco m14 chewed up a box of 180's with no prob, and i would not be afraid to shoot them in it, most Gunshop owners that have experience with these rifles will tell you that 180's wont hurt them as well.

gun shop owners.....??? how many armorers have you talked to about shooting 180's in a stock m14 type rifle?? The advice you are giving folks about using 180 gr bullets in the m14s/m305 ..... is contrary to what the actual experts state.
I could care less what you personally shoot in your rifle...... but a gun shop owner is the last guy i'll take advice from if what he tells me goes against all the armorers and match shooters recommendations.
Guys, if you want the goods on what you can and can not, or should not do with your rifles..... forget all the crap you read here..... from me included..... and go study the works of Jerry Kunhaussen, Scott Duff, John Miller and that zediker guy..... then go cruise the m14-forum.c and check out what those guys have to say about using your 180 gr commercial, saami spec loads in an m14...... you will soon learn, if yer smart, that you won't be listening to the guys on the net that say...... it works fine in my rifle.....

I do apologize for the rant.... it is not aimed at anyone in particular..... but gawd damn, how many times do us guys that really know these rifles have to set you all straight with this 180 gr thing....... I mean Geebus :D

I kill moose with 165 gr bullets......... dead as a door nail....... why do you need to go higher IF there is documentation to back up the statemant that 180 gr is not good for your rifle..... ? don't take my word for it..... go study the history and development from the match shooting perspective and armorers shop manuals...... the m14 rifle, in NM configuration notoriously loved to be fed 168 gr SMK and there is much historical documentation to that fact.

I said once a while if nothing else is available. I have never personally heard of an m14 blowing up or getting a bent rod from someone shooting a box of 180's through it, thats just me, im not an expert, im just giving an opinion, i didnt realize saying that i shot 1 box of 180gr ammo through a rifle would cause so much drama, sorry i posted anything, you are right in every aspect of what you say about the m14/305 and i am wrong on everything thing that i say, there you go, now i dont have to listen to your "rant" anymore.

Dude, you asked a question and did not like the answer. Now you start giving your opinion about why you think they are wrong. Guys like Hungry and 45ACPKING really know their sh** when it comes to the M-14 and answered your question.

Good attitude for someone who just signed on to CGN this month. Keep it up and no one will answer your questions since you seem to know it all...

Are you aiming this at me?? I didnt ask a question about anything dude, i was telling the original poster of this thread that i know people who shot 180's through their m14's all the time and have never had a problem, and i got my post "quoted", I dont think i know it all, its just an opinion like everyone else's.

I used to shoot 180's in my bolt 308's, and was a little dissapointed to find the 168gr suggested limit on the M14, until I dug a bit farther.

Here's why...

Here's some info on 180's vs 165's in terms of performance, same manufacturer.

180 grain Federal Factory

50yd 100 200 300 400 500
1.2 2.4 0 -10.0 -29.5 -60.7 Range 308B 308 Win. (7.62x51mm)
2640 2197 1816 1486 1209 979 Energy 308B 308 Win. (7.62x51mm)

165 grain Federal Factory
0.9 2.1 0 -8.9 -25.6 -52.7 Range P308C 308 Win. (7.62x51mm)
2671 2254 1891 1575 1301 1069 Energy P308C 308 Win. (7.62x51mm)

The 165's outperform the 180's all around, from energy to bullet drop.

So why get all horny for 180's that are generally regarded as unhealthy for your rifle and are LESS capable than the 165's anyways?

NOT aimed at anyone in particular, just worth noting...

I got two boxes of winchester 180 grain softpoint because it was the cheapest stuff I could find at the time, waiting for the my 305.

I did manage to find some surplus SA 147 grain.

I guess I'll just turn off the gas system and shoot the 180s and reload with proper 165 grain or less.

i found the trouble with 165 -168s was SUPPLY more than anything else- lots of 150 and 180 grain in bulk, but getting the 165,even though its listed in the catalogue, was having it in stock- i know it's ballistically a better round, but i buy in 1k lots , or at least i used to, and i got a pretty good deal- as much as 20 bucks over the 100 bullet boxes-
so right now i have a lifetime's supply of 180s-
