18th bday and xmas dilemma.......

Fit is pretty important with a handgun - Like gloves - Even if the fit is objectively "right" for the size / shape of your hand, you may not subjectively like how it feels. You MUST try handguns to see how they feel in your hand, even if you can't test fire, you should dry fire them.

NEXT most important is to consider what mechanism you want. To each their own, but I simply have no understanding of why ANYONE would want a 1911, except as a historical example of how pistols USED to be made. I guess I'll never ride a Harley Davidson either... But, seriously: Do you want single action? TDA? DAO? Striker? Hammer? All have some merits, and some weaknesses. Google is your friend.

Everyone here has a favorite, and can recommend to you what they like, but we aren't you. You need to do some groping of your own to see what works for you.

Let us know how it works out!

PS - from your short list I would vote for the CZ!

PPS - Would your parents buy me a new pistol, too?

Cheers,

Neal

After you solve the huge question of which island paradise to send parents that awesome, you should probably just get a CZ85 Combat.
IMHO, much better than the Sig to shoot. It has a decocker that lets you reholster to swtich back to your primary safely, will let you play in IPSC and IDPA.
It's either that or an SP01 in the tactical flavor again for the decocker.

Both have good .22lr conversion kits which is important, unless you are going off to university with a solid gold trust fund.
Cheers,
Grant

In a 1911 (in 9mm) definitely STI - if something ever does go wrong (highly unlikely) Freedom Ventures will take care of it without shipping the pistol to a foreign country.

+1, If your partial to 1911's that would be my choice. And if they're doaling out the cash why not squeeze them for a 2011 open gun...

I would buy a Pistol that was designed for the Caliber you want , in this case 9mm.

like the others said the CZ is a nice choice
Berreta 92F is also a nice pick

but I would go for

100_0920.jpg

Browning Hi power, the last Creation of John Browning before his death

These are All cheaper then your 9mm copy of the 1911 and were all design and balance for the 9mm Luger cartridge.

I like the 1911 platform as well and if you wanted to stay with it for 9mm I'd also recommend STI.

However if you want 9mm my first choice would be a Browning Hi Power. Second choice SIG 226R

BTW, the original Colt Commanders were designed for 9mm

Buy a good 22 pistol and practice with it. Unless you are a rich 18yo, it will allow a lot more shooting.

:agree:

If you dont already have a .22 pistol, this should be your first buy.
CanAm is right, I think it's the one and only first pistol. Get a Ruger Mk3 22/45 same grip angle as the 1911. They go for less then $400, The brick of 500 wildcat is $21. When you think of it the case of 9mm rounds cost almost as much as the ruger

i already plan on buying a ruger markIII the day my restricted shows up, i have shot and loved the the BHP, but at the moment you guys have swung me in favour of a cz-75, the problem is its one of the few mentioned that i havent shot haha

If you want my 2 cents, I've never been a fan of the CZ75 or 85. They handle weird compared to the 1911 and are uncomfortable IMHO. Don't like em at all!

You know my thoughts on the Beretta 92 and SIG P226 (love 'em!)

If you're against 45ACP just because of price, you should really look at buying the Wolf reloads instead of the AE stuff you were shooting at matches this year. 9mm is $255/1000 and 45ACP is $297/1000. Not much difference in price. Plus, if you get a 1911 in .45, you can pick up a .22LR conversion kit. Practice with what you plan to use in matches.
