Hey guys,

Just finally got in the mail my RPAL after what seemed forever (although compared to some stories, it was almost nothing - lol)

I'm looking to find my first firearm, and after I went to the local gunshops to hold a few recommended i've decided I absolutly love the way a 1911 feels. Very comfortable, love the design, etc.

I held 2 differnt 1911's, one by S&W which I fell in love with, the colors/looks of it we're great compared to the other. It was a gunmetal/almost black in color with a brownish red grip. Stylish, comfortable, loved it. The only issue - it was a .45. Seems like most 1911's I come across online are also a 45.

Now, if I had the money to regularly shoot .45 ammo - I would go ahead with it, but it just seems like too much of an investment at this point in my life. Perhaps down the line that will change - but this IS my first gun afterall.

I also held a Kimber 1911 that was a 9mm, felt the same as the S&W but I could not stand the look. Stainless and shiny - It really turned me away from it - but everything else I did like.

What other companies make a 1911 in 9mm? Preferably something close to the resemblance of the S&W I held - I'm okay with pure black and dark colors, I just do not like "shiney"

Also a place online in Canada I could purchase said firearm - i've tried looking through some of the sponsors but have yet to come across one.

Thanks guys!

Shay

Edit: I also have been looking at M&P as well, and do like the look and from what i've read these things are practically indestructible. Wish I could find one locally to hold to see how it feels. They also seem somewhat substantially cheaper then the 1911 as well.

Edit #2: This is what the 1911 I looked at and wanted looked like, or at very least very close. It's probably not the same model, but you get the idea.

I had a STI Ranger II. Its a commander length gun and while it was a good shooter there were things I did not like about it. I'll post more in the morning, going to bed soon.

Hmm this post intruiges me, perhaps i'll go with the M&P - Cheaper as well.

Don't want to start a 1911 VS M&P by any means but.... having never fired either, and only holding a 1911 (never M&P)...

1911 - cosmetically beautiful, expensive, harder to find in 9mm, very comfortable

M&P - comestics are great, cheaper, easy to find in 9mm, comfort = unknown

Both extremely reliable from what i've read

Hey if you like single action in 9mm try lookin at the browning hi-power. From the same mastermind who brought us the 1911. Right now I'm trying to decide on a 9mm SA as well!

STI is producing the Spartan in 9mm now, I assume that it will be the about the same price as the .45 $810.00 - $819.00, that puts it right in your price range after taxes and is probably your best bet for a 9mm 1911.

I had a STI Edge in 9mm due to local calibre restrictions. Had no troubles with it at all and it had virtually no recoil. Bit above your price range though.

I picked up a Para P18 last week but haven't fired it yet. 1911 in 9mm is ideal if you don't want to reload as you get all the benefits at a lower ongoing cost.

I reload as even 9mm prices are a joke here but it is annoying working with the small cases and projectiles especially compared to when I reload for my .45 Norinco :)

1911's in 9mm

I have a pair of Norinco Model NP-29's which is a 1911A1 in 9mm.

One stock [bottom] and one with some mods [top]:

And a Colt Combat Commander in 9mm:

And a Star Model BM 9mm which is a 1911 "style" pistol.

It is not a true 1911 just looks like one externally.

It is also a 12(6) prohib bue to barrel length:

For double stack 9mm's though after many years of trial and error I have settled on the Browning Hi-Power MkIII:

DocShay, even though you're just starting out you may want to think ahead to how your new gun will fit into the shooting competitions held in your area. Once you've got the basics down pat shooting while being timed really adds some spice to the fun.

With that in mind the M&P fits into the classes more commonly entered by new match shooters where they don't need to do a lot of mods to the gun. That keeps it simple and a little cheaper.

Is there a Rent-A-Gun range in Winnipeg where you can go and try out a bunch of different guns? If not you may want to start by buying a few boxes of 9mm and hook up with folks in your club that would allow you to try out their guns to get a feel for what you like best.

So, more info about the STI Ranger II in 9MM that I had. I got it from Gunnar with a few spare magazines. I think I traded something in, not sure, but the price seemed reasonable even with a few extra magazines. At the time I had just got a Springfield Loaded Park 1911 in .45 so one could say I was on a 1911 kick and wanted a commander in 9MM.

Anyways. The fit and finish of the gun was great, just like any STI that I have seen. No complaints with that. The Ranger II is a bushing-less gun that has a bull barrel. Instead of a regular FLGR or a GI rod it has the STI recoil master system. A two piece system with a hex key to unscrew the end. Disassemble, cleaning and re-assembly at first were a PITA but I did get used to it but still, not as fast as my 1911 and required tools which is always a downfall.

Accuracy was good as it has a good quality 4.15-inch ramped bull barrel and sights and was perhaps a I shot a wee bit better than it with my 226 (possibly due to the crisp factory trigger)

Things I didn't like.... the STIppling (aka the front strap job) just hurt my hand without gloves. I run grip tape on my MC Operators front strap and other 1911s I have are checkered, but some some reason I did not like the golfbal-esque pattern.

I am gonna have to put the guide rode in here, just because it required tools to clean and was a PITA at time.

The gun is a 4.15 slide on a full size govt frame. A non-standard combo to say the least.

All in all, it was a nice gun, but for a 9+1 9MM 1911 that weights 33OZ there are just other guns that were doing it for me that I had.

Going back, I'd get a Colt Commander in 9MM or .45, throw some money into and it have something with class thats special.

Just my 2 cents.

I purchased a Para Ordnance LTC (4.25" bbl) in 9mm. Bought it as a practice pistol since the 9mm is cheaper. Very happy with it. Any problems you can just send it to the Company HQ in Scarborough On. Very accurate, nice shooting piece. Novak sights and 2 x 9 rd mags for about $1000. Got mine from Elwood Epps in On.

I had an STI Trojan in 9mm when they first came out. It was a very nice gun to shoot, but it did have an endless string of problems. I wasn't too disappointed to see it go. Having said that, a 9mm 1911 is the cats ass if you're looking for a reasonably priced, quick, and accurate pistol chambered in a defensive caliber. Soft shooting, quick follow up shots, don't need to reload, what's not to like. I've actually just ordered a Dan Wesson Guardian. It's a 4.25 inch, bobtailed, alloy framed 9mm 1911...Gigidy, Gigidy!!!

BTW, have a serious look at any of the CZ 75/ CZ SP01's. Awesome ergos, well made, well priced, and excellent customer service/parts availability. If you like the 1911 ergos, you'll like the CZ. One word of CZ warning. My buddies and I have noticed, one gun will run perfectly and eat anything, and the next one will be a finicky little bastard(ammo, springs, that sort of thing).
