1911 in a caliber other than .45ACP?

I'd like to look at adding a 1911 to my collection. Uses would be general target practise and plinking. As I'm already stocking .38, .357,9mm and .40S&W in the ammo cupboard I'm not really keen on adding yet another caliber if I can avoid it (45 cost is also a consideration). Would it make sense to buy a 1911 in 9mm or.40 or does buying that gun in anything other than .45 defeat the purpose of having one?

If ya only gonna have one 1911 in the safe, I reckon it ought to be in 45ACP. That said, I added a Springfield RO in 9mm to the stable and it's a fun shooter. Recoil is so mild, it feels like I'm shooting a BB gun.

If you're only going to have one, you owe it to yourself to have the real deal. Plus you can always buy a .22LR Conversion kit to help keep the cost down.

The 1911s I've owned have all been .45s, but a .38 Super would be interesting, as would a 10mm Delta. Only a fool would discount the usefulness of a rimfire adapter, but I have, so I guess I am. Logically, a 1911 in 9mm does make a lot of sense, but its a concept I can't seem to warm up to, probably Jeff Cooper's fault . . . although I do recall a Colt Commander add in G&A years ago that made it seem reasonable.

Just ordered my third 1911, i had thoughts of getting one in 9mm but i will buy 1911 in 45 ACP only, they are the peas and carrots combo... And 45 ACP is my favorite handgun caliber, since i discovered this big accurate bumbelbee caliber, i go tru 1000 rounds of 45 weekly... JP

wow....can I be in your will?

When I'm picking brass after matches by far the two most common sizes are 9mm and 40S&W. I'm more than happy with my CZ's for 9mm but I'd like to shoot a 1911 more often. So far I've only got a .45acp 1911 and a good but far from endless supply of brass. And with the inevitable slow loss of brass at the range I'd like something where I don't need to worry so much.

So.... the plan is to get a 1911 in .40S&W. And to make it feel as much like a .45acp the plan is to load 200gn bullets, likely cast, so I can shoot them a little slower for a more .45acp like "push" instead of the usual .40S&W "snap".

That's my plan. But if it sounds good to you then I don't have a copyright on it... :D

10mm? .38Super? It's the same brass loss issue but now it's worse since it's even HARDER to find either size to allow us to keep on shooting.

Except for 308/357/38/44... I never pickup my brass but it pleased certain members to take them... All perfect this way... JP.

We know you're rich Caramel no need to put emphasis on it lol.

And to the OP, since some of us here do have budgets, i wondered the same thig before getting in 1911s
It came down to shoot 300/400 rounds a week of 9 and/or 40, or 150/180 rounds a week with 45ACP.
I rather shoot something of less power and have appropriate training time. But hey, some here shoot thiusands of 45 per week or so it seems, your budgets your choices.
I have 2 STIs, one in 9mm and one in 40SW, i have no regrets whatsoever!

Edit : BcRider, i load 200gr bullets in 40SW casings, to make power factor its still snappy, nothing like a 45

I have a Trojan in 40, a BHP in 9 mm and a series 80 Colt in 45. The 45 ACP will definitely be the last one to leave my safe when I sell them. When I ask newbie's what they would like to try, it is always the 45 ACP that they choose.
