1911 Modifications Thread:

It's an absolute shame that this thread has been decimated by the image hosting sites.

Yes.... Fotofack'it is keeping my pics hostage while they try to extort $$ for something they provided for free for years.... Chances of them getting anything out of me now is a huge nada!

Id like to know what that rear sight is called as well! I first tried one on a Colt Gold Cup Trophy. I don’t know if it was stock or not.

parts wise will full size 1911 parts fit commander size 1911s i know they have different grip sizes and recoil spring/ guide rods but for the the rest what will work, i cant seem to find much info on this. any info would be great

Seeing how this thread has lots of pictures missing I'll post a few. Here's a few of my projects, all Norinco's. The first couple are some of the unmarked ones Canada Ammo had a few years back. The one with the brake has a 460 Rowland barrel in it. The second one was my first 1911, and my first try customising one. I did the work to them myself with the exception of milling the dovetails for the sights. The last one is an NP29 I started on yesterday, going to try classic minor for IPSC next summer hopefully. I kind of want a checkered front strap, but that's a lot of work.

Finished my 9mm Norinco today. I was going for a two tone look, but parkerizing can be a bit unpredictable. I was hoping the manganese solution I used for the slide would be darker and the zinc one for the frame to be a bit lighter.
I undercut the trigger guard, blended the beavertail and thumb safeties to the frame, cleaned up some machining marks, did some trigger work and fit an oversized aluminum trigger with an over travel screw.
While I was doing the metalwork I also fixed the scallops behind the trigger that Norinco never seems to get right. This is the third one I've done this stuff too now. For parkerizing the gun I sandblasted it with crushed glass, degreased with laquer thinner, then put the parts in hot water while I was waiting for the solution to come up to temp. Then into the chemicals for about 5 min for the frame, and 20 min in a different solution for the rest. Back into a sink full of hot water to rinse everything, being careful not to let the solution dry on any of the parts. After rinsing I dry the parts off a bit, soak in some 15-40 motor oil, and set them on the pellet stove to hear up. Once they're good and hot I cleaned as much oil off as I could and assembled the gun. I'll let the oil soak in for a few days, then clean the sights with some acetone and repaint the white dots. I tried drilling out the front sight to convert it to a fiberoptic, but my drill bit broke off when I was almost through.

After going through this post, it makes me think about building some guns again.
It's to bad that you can't buy barrels and slides anymore from the American parts dealer's.
At one time you could get the Colt Custom 45 parts from the big Colt Dealers and just change
parts on your Series 70.
Colt made a Colt Government Combat Slide replacement for their Series 70 45 , just change slide
parts and you had the high visible sights.
IMI had a contract to make 45 Government slides and barrels. Slide marking 7790314 A tz Barrel
marking 45 ACP 86 grey parkerizing color
I have 5 of each plus other Colt parts One of these days I will build or rebuild some guns

Turns out the 7790314 A slides are US military contract hard slides for National Match and the barrels
are from the same contract.
Who makes stripped 1911 frames?
Thought about Norinco frames also

Are the two little tits on the bottom of the flanges where the barrel link attached essential on a 1911? When I cleaned mine after a range shoot the other day, both of these were broken off. Everything still seems to function fine, so I filed off the sharp edges. Not a precision shooter, just an old Norinco that is fun to take to the range now and then. Do I need a new barrel?

Just took possession of a NP29. Hoping to swap the front sight to Fibre optic. Hoping someone can help me figure out which sights are compatible. Thanks!

Good Morning Everyone!

during the rush trying to pick new units up, I managed to snag myself a Girsan MC 1911 C in .45acp. This is my first 1911, all the rest of mine are striker fired so I'm trying to learn the most I can about it as well as looking for a MUST do upgrades.

without saying it, I will say, This particular unit will be sitting in a biometric safe possibly near where I lay my head at night.

looking to make the best upgrades for function and dependability, as well as accuracy. I currently have Wilson combat mags, trijicon sights, and a streamlight tlr- 1 HL enroute for it.

Cheers!1911.jpg

I think I went through the whole thread and only one user has concerted to 10mm
So who are the best gunsmiths for a 9mm to 10mm conversion on a Commander frame nowadays?
