A question for the 1911 guys/gals in the know; I've replaced the internals on a Norinco Commander with NightHawk BNIB stuff but my thumb safety is Norinco original for now. To lock the safety it is stiff and on disassembly (3rd time) I've noticed it rubs against the strut but only slightly. I don't think this is causing the resistance I'm feeling.
I've also noticed that the safety snaps into "safe" as it should only when the hammer is in half ####. All of my other 1911's the safety won't sweep up in half ####. Aside from the safety, the function of the gun seems fine (no live rounds yet) and after a fair bit of trigger work it is a wonderful break of the sear with no trigger creep.

Has anyone run into this before?

Every 1911 thumb safety I have ever dealt with needed some fitting for proper function.
I suspect yours is no different.
Very easy to do with a small file.

YMMV

Yes, when you have done it before you know what to look for, should not be done by a new guy

Thanks guys. I am a new guy, and I'm going to give 'er a go :). Worse that can happen is I need a new safety lever (I was going to source a NightHawk one eventually anyhow). I figure as we (I) don't carry, the safety isn't relied on a chambered round. This is just a (really expensive) range toy.

Said it here before but obviously have to say it AGAIN! If anyone has to ask these questions ... for their OWN SAFETY and the safety of other shooters around them DONOT #### with the hammer/sear/disconnector system OR the thumb and grip safety mechanisms until you know the gun well enough to completely dis-assemble and re-assemble the 1911 BLIND FOLDED! And if you don't think that's possible ... better think again!!!
On a positive note ... at least get the Jerry Kuhnhausen book on the 1911 and read it cover to cover before attempting ANY "gunsmithing" on it...

Honestly...as long as he's following even ONE of the four fundamental rules, the safety on a range toy is pretty much irrelevant and adjacent bays are perfectly safe.

You don't learn to fix 1911s without working on 1911s and test fitting stuff that's not quite there yet. As long as the gun holder is even halfway responsible, the slight margin of safety offered by the mechanical safeties on a gun is meaningless. If he's irresponsible, they're equally meaningless.

My Glock doesn't even have a safety , so what's the problem as long as he keeps it pointed down range as it should be ?

Btw, your glock does have a safety, look at that little tab sticking out of your trigger. I think that is a safety.

Something like a DA HK USP v7 doesn't have a safety or decock lever.

It is the fact of a non working safety with a round in the chamber, and the lackluster attitude if it works or not.

He did not show a lackluster attitude , he merely stated that since his 1911 was to be used on a range , pointed down range , as is safe and not carried that there was no need for the thumb safety , point of fact , he's not carrying condition one , round in chamber , hammer cocked , that was all .
Yeah , I know the Glock safe trigger [google glock leg , just for kicks ] , that just seems like it's more of a marketing gimmick , it does very little to stop the trigger from being pulled , unlike the grip safety or thumb safety of a 1911, just saying.

Great advice, you can't learn without trying.

Wow...MadCow, are you my ex-wife from a past life or something? This seems like a bit of a thing between us for some reason? Honestly, how can I make reparations?

Misanthropist and Greenhorse six nailed it, myself and entire immediate family are responsible gun owners and shooters so rest assured that I wouldn't sweep you if you were in a lane next to me, which is more than I can say for a lot of folks on the range.
We (my family) always treat firearms as though they were loaded and chambered live, we assume that any safety mechanism can fail and therefore isn't to be trusted to the absolute, and we never point a firearm at anything that isn't to be destroyed (that paper takes a sh1tkickin':)). Anyhow, and with all due respect, it's my gun and although I've never done this type of work before (Smithing) I'm going to give 'er a go if it's all the same to you?
Special thanks to Greenhourse six for the links (very informative) and Misanthropist for telling as it is.
