1911 slide interchangeability ?

You will probably find that a 9mm top end wont go on a .45 frame unless you change the .45 ejector on the top of the frame to a 9mm ejector.

Other than that, if you are working with a complete top end, it should work.

Yes, I was thinking I could buy a complete 9 mm slide and just swap them out.

Thanks

The short answer is “no”.

The slide/frame fit is almost unique for every 1911.

That having been said, you could get a 9mm slide fitted to your 45 frame - assuming you swapped out you ejector each time. Also, unless you get a 1911 with a ramped barrel, I’m not certain the feed ramp on the .45 frame would work.

By the time you get the “upper” fitted to your “lower” it will probably cost nearly what a new pistol would be - esp. if we’re talking about a Remington.

I have swapped a .45 barrel and slide assembly and ejector onto a 9mm 1911 without issue. Cannot see any reason why the opposite would not be possible. A stripped 1911 frame can be built up in a number of calibers without the frame's feed ramp being an issue. If the frame is cut for a feed ramp on the barrel, then obviously any barrel would have to match. 1911 parts have been made for many years. There may be tolerance issues affecting fit. Rack grade guns as pretty accepting of miscellaneous parts. One way to find out.

One time I had three .45acp non-1911s on the work bench, a Norinco Commander, a Norinco double-stack and a Para Ordnance double-stack. I was curious if the short Norinco slide would fit on the fat Norinco frame, and vice versa. The answer is yes and yes. The limitation is the length of the rails on the two frames. The conventional 1911 frame has a long rail on each side, but the fat frame has two sections each in front and behind the magazine well. Not necessarily as strong on recoil. My .02-cents.

YMMV I guess.

I’ve tried swapping out the slides on my various STI 1911s with no success. They just don’t fit.

That because all 3 pistols have loose slide to frame fits. I bet all 3 pistols with the correct slides on them are sloppy fits to start with, and rattle when you shake them side to side right?

YMMV I guess.

The complete opposite, slide to frame fit is to tighter tolerances, better fitting from the factory

Unless the slide has a ramped barrel, you will have feeding issued due to the angles from say a 9mm to 45acp swap from the feed ramp angles. You need to switch the ejector too
