I was looking at the Norinco 1911A1 and the Commander version of the same gun. What will be the differences in shooting with an extra 3/4" of barrel?

This would be my first handgun so I need all the information I can get.

Thanks for replies.

longer barrel = more velocity for the same amount of gun powder. Say you are going to reload for the gun. You can use 4.7 grains of titegroup with 230 grain bullet and get 800 ftps from a commander but 900 ftps from a goverment. The number's are exaggrated, but you get the idea. The longer barrel makes the gun larger so it is heavier. And heavier guns give you less felt recoil.

So it all depend on the purpose of the gun. Target shooting, fun plinking, IPSC go with the government model the A1, commander to me is more like compact. Self defence? I don't really see the advantage of having a gun with shorter barrel unless you plan on concealed carry.

I just ordered the commander, I like the look of the shorter barrel over the longer one, it will be my first 1911, so I can't tell you much.

I just got my first pistol also, it's an ARMCO prepped Norc1911 Gov't model. I think full length is the way to go. However, like you, I did consider the Commander also. Full barrel get's my vote.

I believe Commanders are also known for more problems with malfunctions due to the shortened stroke and related timing issues, along with shorter, stiffer recoil springs being required and having a lighter slide. I would expect the full-length 1911 to prove more reliable, in addition to having reduced felt recoil.

I like shorter barrels more most of the time, just for fun though. For any competition gun, I woudl almost always go full size but just for fun, I like the shorter barrels. Dan is right too: the shorter sight radius is easier to see, even if it might not be as conducive to user based accuracy.

I too prefer the shorter guns. I tend to shoot better with them, even though supposedly are not more inherently accurate.

To answer your question until you are an expert shooter it is negligible. Even then I would argue its personnel and not the pistol.

Try and handle and shoot them both if you can before you buy. Or buy both and sell the one (on CGN:) ) you like least for a $50 hit (consider it a rental fee;) ). Personally I like the look of the commander better, it just seems more balanced.

Somthing to watch with Norinco 1911A1, I just got mine, almost found out the hard way that it would fire with the slide safety on and the grip safety not pressed, had to send it back. It was replaced without any hassel.

I like my Norinco M1911A1-C for the simple fact that its compact, powerfull (.45acp duh), very customizable like any 1911, light to carry (run) at the range in a dropleg holster, accurate in the right hands and with adjustable sights, very good metallurgy (SAE4140), fast for "home defense" type situations and just looks different from everybody else's full size dime-a-dozen 1911.

I've had a Colt M1911A1 Commander 80s series for a year now. Never had a single problem with it. Yes its lighter and you feel the recoil more and the gun lifts alot more. Still very accurate.
For some reason I shoot better with the full sized ones though, my hand seems to be steadier with the extra weight of a Government.

I agree !! But, it all comes down to your personal preference. If you can handle both. Try holding, aiming and dry firing (With a snap cap of course). You'll find one probably slightly more comfortable I am sure.

They both handle great, but "I" find the government just fits a little better.

I have owned both (they were Norinco's) and both were excellent guns. The only difference I can think of is that the Commander version yields a bit more muzzle rise with equivalent ammunition. It is also a "balanced" feeling gun, where the GM has a slightly "muzzle heavy" feel to it. They're both great.

Jeff/1911.

C'mon now, you aren't getting off that easy - which one (or both) did you pick ? :D

From all of the advice, I figured the longer barrel would be the easier one to start with, so I ordered one from Armco. Even Gunnar recommended the longer barrel. I recokon I could get the C version later if need be. :D
