1916 colt pistol question

Crown over V sounds like part of a commercial London UK proof mark which would indicate it was sold through Colt's UK agent who was in London.

+1

And it is usually noted that these so proofed 1911's also have a very tiny "JJ" [double J's] stamped in the frame in the upper area above the trigger guard.

New info

The mystery marks on the front strap of my 1916 have been solved thanks to a fellow CGN'r who saw an identical set of marks on a 1916 Colt on another site - (coltautos.com) (and look at gun of the month Feb 2010). They are British proof marks and what I thought was a C is part of a lightly struck crown. From the serial number it is likely part of a 100 lot sent to the Brit Govt. through allied purchasing agent & banker JP Morgan who turns out (big surprise) to have made another fortune from WW1 before the US even got involved.

Thanks gentleman - sounds like I wasted $100+ US on the Colt letter :slap:

(sorry for hijacking your thread Mike, I see some stampings on the tigger guard of your gun, same as below?))

I cannot seem to find the "JJ" stamp (there are some stamps on the trigger guard itself), but there is a single "J" stamped on the barrel

You will always get that $100 back plus more by having that letter.
