Thought I would share this one just recently picked up. Haven’t received it yet but checking the tracking a couple times a day!
Going to try and hunt down original base and mount

I have never seen one drilled in that location, front of the action and on right side. Any I have or seen has always been on the left side towards the rear of the action. Would need a totally different mount. Probably done after in was in civilian hands.

Maybe I'm not understanding what you are traying to say... but this is the normal location for a PE mount. (I have a Soviet 1935 ex-PE that I need to get around to restoring - but it doesn't have the cool SA stamp :) )

Your first picture shows shows holes one the right side of the action. On any Russian or Finnish rifles I have seen that is the wrong location. Your second picture shows matching holes on the left side. Mosin mounts where attached on the left side only and not out in front of the bolt.

That would be a PU, what the op has was a PE.

Two early models of scopes mounted on the 91/30 were referred to as PE, being the "unified model" and PEM, the"unified model modern". PE production 1933-37 and PEM production 1937-40. The acronyms referring to the scope and not the mount type. The difference between the two are significant. The PE allowed for focus adjustment whereas the PEM did not. The move away from the focus ring was to simplify production and to attempt to stem reported problems with the scopes "leaking" due to poor seals.

The holes in your receiver are legitimate and I envy you, as the ones on my example have been plugged. The appropriate scope type for your 1936 rifle would be a PE.

There are many aftermarket producers of the mounts. The reproduction scopes tend to come from Ukraine and they're kinda busy right now. Originals can be had but are rare and expensive.

Here are three examples of the evolution of the mass produced Soviet 91/30 sniper rifle.

Ive been looking for one of these for along time. Cant believe I found one in Canada. Saw a couple on Gunbroker a number of years ago.
I resnipered a '42 Izhevsk PEM that I use as a shooter. Found and original base, mount, and scope for that one. I'll take some pictures and post that one in a bit.
Anybody know of any original top mount/base for this PE?

Thought so. Guy didn’t know what he had at all. But also had a higher price on it too. Otherwise it would’ve sold sooner. I’ve bought and sold 2 PE over the years, and always ended up selling them. Much prefer the PU. But for the collection, still cool.

Congrats.

PS: Did you just purchase it? It’s been on there for months then?

Yeah he kind of knew what he had but didn’t at the same time. I just purchased it. Should have it in my hand’s tomorrow or the next day
I saw 2 on gunbroker about 5-6 years ago. Don’t watch the site religiously but frequently enough

Unreal, I’ve actually never heard of someone in Canada owning a PE until you so that’s a pretty cool thing to have. You should post some post a couple more photos, that’s a real treat.

I didn't think they were that rare - it was the first Mosin I bought pretty much right after getting my license way back when o_O So are they really that rare?

I do agree that a PE _with Finn markings_ is indeed a rare bird :)
