1947 browning auto 5

This is my first post so if anything is wrong take that into consideration.!! I was looking at maybe going with a new shotgun that can put a magnum shell through it. So I started trying to find what mine is worth and have found auto 5 from 500-12k. How do you find out about these guns?

All I know is it is a 1947 in great shape, have the wood box it originally came in and the manuals.

The killer part is that my dad gave it to me when I was 20 (19 yrs ago) and it was brand new. he picked up off of old timer who never used it. I have treated it well but has dings on it and such. I'll try to post pics if I know how. if its big dollars I will sell, but if not i'll keep it. it is the best weighted gun I have ever shot but had no idea that it was in the collector side of things.
 
It all depends upon the grade. From Field, as the name suggests, to something like Midas, and everything in between. Pictures are mandatory. Right now we know less than you.
 
Yep, it all depends on what grade/model it is. If just the typical 12 gauge field grade, value is $400.00 give or take in which case I would think the sentimental value is worth more than that.

I think I am going to ask a question here.......... where did you find the age of this gal?
Or I suppose, come about determining her age?

as for date I may have got it wrong, the serial is 23929 so something is not right,its missing a digit from the 1947 serial numbers. I got my info here http://www.browning.com/customerservice/dategun/detail.asp?id=13 I looked real quik and thought it fell in the 47 numbers. so now what does a five digit serial mean?

and my pops is the one pushing me to sell it! we will see. if it turns out to be a collector item or just one of those guns you don't want to use,it's not for me. I love guns but i'm not a collector!! I'm a hunter who likes nice guns!!
 
Box and or manual may have a date to give you a rough idea. Beautiful shotgun I might add. I'm sure many more people would love to see a photo of the box ;)
 
Keep that gun. It's not valuable enough to make a big difference in price towards a new gun. If you can't afford an extra $300 on a new gun then save up more. The sentimental value will be greater then the monetary value on this gun eventually. I'd have to be in damn dire straits to sell a gun passed down to given to me by my dad.

If you want a magnum gun, 3" Wingmaster's can be had for around $500, for a bit more (around $900-ish) you can get into a SX3 which is a great auto-loader.
 
What is the barrel length and choke? Looks to be in exceptional condition. Is it a 2-3/4" gun or chambered for 3"?

Worth more than $300, though.
 
The short term monatary gain will never surpass the sentimental value of having a gun your dad gave you . Save more and buy the gun you want .years down the road when your dad is gone you will look back and be very happy that you kept a gun that belonged to your dad .

Is there a letter prefix to the serial number, or just the 5-digit number?
 
just the serial number. And don't worry it's not a money thing it's just i'm not the kind of guy to keep a gun for collector reasons. if it was worth money I would sell just for the fact that I would not want to use it hunting and I would hate to just leave it in the gun safe. I do love this gun and I will use it! I take good care of guns though. I have lots of guns my dad gave me. The ones that I remember as a little kid that he bought new that I will pass to my boys. Don't worry i'm not just worried about money. now that i know what it is worth i will have no issue using it. I'll dig out the case and manual and put pictures up later.
But does anyone know what year it may be?

I was looking at wing masters but i will probably go with a browning bps. I have lots of guns from my dad,i'm actually buying him guns now as he is getting older and having to go to smaller calibers. the main reason for selling this one would be to buy him a big dollar 20guage over\under. my shot gun will be under a grand don't need the money for that. but if this a5 was worth more that would help get me closer to my goals. spending three grand for two shotguns is hard to get the ok from the wife!! I just bought two x bolts one in 270 ( dad) and one in 300wm (me) so after scope and mounts that was almost 4grand, but like my dad did for me, i gotta buy for two now.
 
If that is the length of the serial number and no other digits or letters, then I think you
have answered yer own question.
My A5 20 nee 1958 has the same front sight assembly.
I figured at the age this gal was born, she would have the front trigger guard safety.
More home werk fer moi.
