Picked up refurbed sks with a force matched replacement dust cover that has been partially scrubbed but it appears to be dated 1948. The 1 is completely gone, the 9 is only just visible and the 48 is pretty easy to make out. There is also part of the tula star that is still visible. Rest of the gun is nothing special, looks like an early 53 tula judging by the other features although what is interesting is it has an early style bolt & carrier with the spring loaded firing pin.

Second one I've seen. The first had a similar font but a complete Tula star. Inscription said "CKC-45" under the star, and 1948 below that. Was a heavy refurb and I can't remember if the recoil spring cover matched. Will have to dig up the pic.

Edit: Found it. Didn't take took long haha.

I didn't buy it because at the time I didn't realize the significance of the date. When I went back a day later it was gone.

So that is two recoil spring covers on heavy refurb guns with 1948 dates. Mismatched cover is likely, with the guns being later. But a gun with one of those covers would be an awesome piece for an sks collector.

Looking at mine i can just barely make out the c, the hashmark and the 45 of ckc-45 as well, shame mine was scrubbed, that one looks pretty neat.

45 were the first. War time trials on the Eastern Front. It is the SKS-45 (1945) of course.

Full production is believed to not have started until 49. However I am led to believe there are 45, 46, 47 and 48 versions in Russian museums.

I think they were more mistake stampings that were either missed or scrubbed for the parts bins to be used in refurbishment which it looks like they were. But my theory means no more than anyone else guess.

Maybe 1947 or 48 was the first years with "standard" SKS top covers - Because 1944, 1945, and 46 are completely different styles...
