1952 Bringing home the bacon.

Nabs,

Perhaps classic old boats are a bit like classic old guns.

I guess I tend to like the old stuff.

Great pics and great memories. We had a nice old Peterborough boat at our cabin. They were a few on the lake in those days. Although I didn't have a Grandpa, my Dad spent lots of time with me fishing, hunting, and just plain old "hangin' out". To my Dad and Mom, family came first. Dad was a successful grain farmer, lived in town, and never worked another day in winter after he was married.

When you are young "sometimes" you really don't know what your Grandpa does......except that he spends fun time with you.

What I later realized was that he cleans up pretty well....no more peak hat .....and more dapper.

I later realized that he was a serious businessman.

A side from everything else....we got along famously from the beginning even if he tried to steal my teddy bear in the early days.

I can't get over the quality of those pictures....most of my family pictures are small, blurry, and missing. I bet they were magazine quality for the early 50's.

As I have been scanning old slides, I am surprised how good the photos were that my Father took back then.
He was using a good camera....the rest are so so.

I had some issues with my Grandfather.
He had serious flower gardens that I had to help feed with horse manure when I could have been out in the boat.....

Also, at one point along the line my Grandfather decided he would take up golf with his friend that had a cottage next door.

Guess who was the caddy.....very early in the morning.
I suspect that is where I learned to hate golf.

They were both awful players and I learned more swear words as a young kid that probably prepared me for the school yard in the future.

My Grandfather's golf buddy with his Wife....a better golfer.

Thanks for all the interest in this thread.
This was only done because of me finally scanning old family photos....it has been a huge project that I have resisted starting for many years.....still not finished.

My maternal Grandfather died when I was very young...I never knew him, so my paternal Grandfather did double duty.

The following is a mix of photos mostly dating back to the 1950s.
I found this one as being rather interesting in the lane behind may parents house in 1950---deliverying milk before the truck.

pikesroad,

The sweet innocence of the 50s changed for me between 1966 and 1968.
I lived and studied in Paris during the student revolt when Paris was a war zone.

I had some American friends in Paris who had dodged the draft as the Viet Nam War was raging.
I remember hearing about some very sad letters regarding family members or friends that were casualties back then.

Got stuck in North Africa during the six day Israeli war.
Arrived in Tunis when it was under martial law following the bombing of the British or American Embassy....I can't remember which.
Travelled overland to India by car from Europe which a lot of young people were doing back then.
Afghanistan Iran and Pakistan were more peaceful places back then.

It was a turbulent time......but not like today!
I am glad that I did it back then.

I saw lots of examples of the Enfields and other guns turned out by the Afghan craftsmen.
Travelling through the Khyber Pass back then was an interesting experience...as I recall.
A lot of history in that area needless to say.

David

Paris despite the turmoil had its brighter moments as I recall.

You know how happy he made you, but you won't know how happy you made him until you get to be a GF yourself.

Born in 1884. We lost about 60,000 men like your grandfather in WWI. Was he in it?

Thanks for those photos of a better Canada.

RRCo.

Good question, I never heard any comments regarding WWI.
He and my Great Uncle started a new business in 1910.
I have no idea what the protocol for enlistment was back then.

My Wife's Grandfather was one of the 60,000 Canadians lost in WWI.
March 23 1874- August 8th 1918 (Needless to say ...she did not know her Grandfather)

Lt.-Col. Elmer Watson Jones commanded the regiment for two years, the longest of any of the Battalion's COs, from 1916 to 1918, when he was killed in action.
On the 8th of August, 1918, he was mortally wounded when advancing with the Battalion in the attack on Marcelcave East of Amiens, and expired a few minutes later.

Unfortunately on August 8th 1918 Lt. Col. Jones ran into a machinegun in a field 'possibly' as shown below that brought his life to an end.

For all his interest in my hockey stuff I am not sure if my Grandfather knew that his efforts helped me to be voted the MVP in the local Midget hockey league in 1961....as a goaler. He died in 1962.

As I was looking through some stuff relating to my Wife's Grandfather in WWI as posted above, I decided to re-scan some photos of the snipers using Ross rifles from the book shown below.

I don't own a Ross rifle and know nothing about them but it seems as though these snipers liked them and kept them when others were exchanging for Enfield’s.

I understand that there are many on this Forum that have a soft spot for these Ross rifles.
