Hello all, new here, I just initiated the transfer of registration of a restricted handgun here in Ontario. I had called the CFC last week and confirmed that in order to buy this weapon do I need to be a member of a club and was told, NO, that I do not need to be a member. Upon hearing that, I made the purchase yesterday and the transfer process has started, I called the CFC and gave them my reference number and answered questions to confirm my identity and one of the questions was what club am I a member of, my answer was none, and she followed up with "not yet then" and i said yes. so after all of that, she said that it is now being given to the CFO in Ontario for approval. The fact that I have a restricted and non restricted license, in fact, just renewed back in December, isn't that the approval already? Is this normal procedure or should I expect some trouble because I am not a member of a club? Just to confirm, I do plan on joining a club as I do want to shoot it, just time was a factor in purchasing this weapon.

Thanks for any input,

Eric

It's normal....and expect the CFO to take their sweet time too

I've had transfers be approved in a day by the Cfc....only to be held up at the CFO for eight weeks

It's normal... My first and only took 2 weeks for the transfer to complete (Dec.-Jan.) I have no membership.
Request they email you when transfer is complete. You get a temporary transfer registration in your email.
Once you have the temp registration, the real one will be in about a week later.

Sounds like you did a private purchase? If so, when asked "What club are you a member of?" Your reply should have been "I'm in the process of joining XYZ." Private sale can take anywhere from a few days (rare occasion) to several weeks. If you did a retail purchase, the store handles all the legal work on your behalf down to the shipping. With a local private sale, when you get the approval for the transfer, call the CFO for your STATT to and from the seller's address, OR it could be at the seller's range if that is neutral territory and also gives you a chance to do a full function test since you won't be shooting it until you get your club membership and LTATT (or an invite from a friend who has his LTATT and a club membership but that's another story).

I'm going through the same thing right now. I'm not a member of a club, but I used to be a member of two. I'm on a waiting list for a new club as I didn't like the other two. I wanted to buy a restricted gun, two of the stores said they would not sell it to me unless I could prove I was a current member at a club, a third store said no problem we do it all the time. I called the Ontario cfo to ask what their policy is. I was given very vague answers, they wouldn't say if the transfer would be approved or not.

If the transfer is denied is there a way to appeal it. Also should I call the cfc and inform them that I am enrolled in my gun club and have to go through their training program first before becoming a member?

I've never had to got that way, but apparently, there is an appeal process defined, but therefusal has to be in writing....

I'm in B.C. just went through this. When I ordered my AR I wasn't a member .The next week I renewed my membership. The following week I received a letter from the RCMP saying I either need to show proof of membership or apply for a collectors permit.
