20 gauge pump

I’m thinking I might want a 20 gauge pump . I have a few 12 gauges .
I would think one that I could swap out barrels on it . Use for grouse
Maybe even well……

What do you recommend ?
 
The Browning BPS are nice... And so are the Browning M12 reproduction (but forget about replacement barrels)

Maybe consider finding a 20 gauge version of one of your 12 gauge pumps, so the sight line, handling etc will be somewhat simliar. The guns mentioned above are both great options.
 
I'd look for an older Ithaca M37. Nice, well built, lightweight shotguns. Many of the new 20ga pumps these days are heavy clunkers that handle like a duck gun. Nothing more than a 20ga bbl mounted to a 12ga frame.
 
I don't think you can change barrels but did want to mention a winchester sxp 20ga pump if you are looking for inexpensive but reliable and very comfortable to shoot 20ga.
It's surprisingly become one of my favorite shottys. Was an impulse buy that I've never regretted. Light and quick to aim.
I often grab it instead of my wingmaster 12ga, or my Win 12ga semi, though I love my children all the same lol.

Can I switch out barrels on that Ithaca 20 gauge ? If so how hard to find barrels for it ?

I recently bought a next to new used Winchester SXP in camo finish from a pal and for the $, it seems like a great gun for grouse etc
I really miss my Ruger 22/20gauge OU, that was the bomb for small bird hunting
 
Mossberg will have the most barrel options and the easiest to source the barrels. However they've gone up in price so much they're not worth it for me
Remington would likely be the next bet
Newly made ithacas can swap barrels but they're expensive guns and barrels are hard to find. I don't believe canada has an ithaca dealer anymore. Shame as the 37 is a great gun

I've owned one too in 20 gauge. I've also owned a Browning Model 12 repro. Both good guns but I liked the Remington better.

Having seen both in person the only difference I could see was the finish. Here's a comparison between the two.

The biggest difference between the two is in the metal and wood finish is a high lustre blue , better wood, and wood finish on the Wingmaster as opposed to the flat , cheaper wood finish and flat metal finish on the Fieldmaster.
I'm not sure bout the trigger guards though , they may be the same, maybe not.
The Wingmaster's is aluminum

There was a time when Remington did that - I had one - Remington Model 870 - a 12 gauge frame with a 20 gauge barrel installed - I do not know what other mods were done to that action - the fact that it was a 12 gauge frame was reflected by a letter before (or maybe after) the serial number - there were also Remington Model 870 with 20 gauge frames and 20 gauge bore, but different barrels.
 
The 20 gauge frame required a completely different barrel than the 20 gauge on a 12 gauge frame. About a pound difference in weight in the two 20 gauge guns.
 
The 20 ga will do almost everthing a 12 will do but with a lot less recoil,the 12 is better suited for longer range ducks and geese.I use a cheap charles daly in 20 semi for turkeys with the right choke it will knock them down past 40 yrds,my slug gun is a 220 savage and for upland birds I carry a browning pump in 20,short,fast a easy carrying,can<t go wrong with a 20 ga

1.25oz loads from all my 20s kick way harder than 1.25oz loads in almost every 12ga I have. I have some 12s that are just over 6lbs and similar weight to my 20s
I do agree that a 20 can do much of what a 12 can do until it cones to heavy loads of bigger shot sizes and of course buckshot
 
Browning BPS Upland Special. 24" barrel.

They are discontinued, built on a 20 ga. frame. I bought a used one a couple years ago and will not sell it.

Guntech can you explain this a bit more for me . When you say a Remington 870 20 gauge Lightweight is built on a true 20 gauge frame does that mean some 20 gauges are built on 12 gauge frames ?

The only Remington shotgun I have is a Remington 870 12 gauge Police Model with short barrel

Yes Remington made many 20 gauge 870's on the 12 gauge action, and they made 20 gauges on true 20 gauge actions as well.
